Prenatal Case Study B299

Tina is a 16 year old and pregnant. She comes with her mother to see the dietitian at Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). Tina is 4 months pregnant and has gained 20 pounds since she became pregnant. She was a little heavy (height 5'4" and weight currently 160#) before she became pregnant. She does not smoke, but her mother does.

Tina saw a physician for the first time last week. She has a prescription for prenatal vitamins but hasn't filled it yet. Tina says she has not felt sick at all. In fact her mother reports that Tina is eating more than usual based on the amount of chips and snack foods they are going through. Tina is home for summer break and she cooks for herself while her mother is at work during the day. During the visit, Tina doesn't say much. Her mother does most of the talking.

A brief diet history indicates the following"

10a,: 2 doughnut(usually glazed or chocolate)

2 cups of coffee with sugar and cream

Noon: Hot dog or roast beef /ham sub

Potato chips

Cola

Pm snack: More chips or cookies, oreo favorite

Cola (usually a couple through the afternoon)

Dinner: 2 pieces of fried chicken(prefer white meat)

Small salad with ranch dressing

2 cups of corn

2 cups of mashed potatoes with gravy

Iced tea

Snack: Chocolate Ice cream and Oreo Cookie(4-5)

Questions:

1.What factors place ALL teen mothers at risk? Are any of these factors in the case study? Discuss which ones you think make Tina at risk during her pregnancy?

2. Looking at the case study, what is Tina's biggest nutritional concern?(Submit also the nutritrac data analysis) Discuss in detail all of the concerns.

3.Based on the diet history 'Nutrient Analysis"(Nutritrac Data), evaluate Tina's diet. What nutrients are currently consumed in inadequate or excessive amounts? Will the vitamin supplement make up for the quality of her diet? ( I suggest a comparative chart)

4.Assess Tina's weight gain. How much weight should she gain for the entire pregnancy? Approximately how much should she weigh at 4 months? What recommendations could be given regarding Tina's weight?

5.Does the secondhand smoke have any effect on Tina or the fetus? If yes, what are the possible effects?

the questions are pretty clear and straight forward. i would look for internet resources that that have information on diet and vitamins for pregnancy. folic acid is usually one of the big recommended vitamins for pregnancy that pregnant women are low in. and you can obviously see that this girl does not eat a balanced diet at all. chips are high is sodium which puts her at risk for pre-eclampsia. search the internet for effects of smoking on unborn fetus. there are some ob weblinks listed on this thread that may have die and nutritional information on them, but you'll need to look:
