I need help for a friend

Nurses General Nursing

Okay, I am hoping someone can help me out with some information. I have a friend and seriously its a friend not me.. She just got a job at a local hospital. Before she took her boards she was having wisdom teeth pain and took one of her mothers Lortab so she could study and not be in pain. Well she went into work the next night and was told to go take a random drug pee test. Well it just came back and it was positive. Her supervisor has told her their policy is firing. We just graduated nursing school together and both of us passed our boards. She knows she wasnt supposed to take the drug when it wasnt prescribed to her but she is a single parent and her insurance at the hospital had not kicked in.

So my question is, what can this do to her career as a nurse? Can they take her license, and if not what are the odds of her getting another job at another hospital if she gets fired from this one?

She doesnt come on this board and I knew I could get help here. I told her to call the board of nursing and talk to them but I am not sure if that would help or hurt her.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

This might get shut down if they feel you are seeking legal advice but I wanted to add that most BONs really don't want to take our licenses. They have programs to help addicted nurses so my thought would be that if she is honest hopefully they will help keep her license although maybe not her present job. Wish her well.

Regretfully, this question requires expertise that we cannot provide on this forum. Your friend needs to seek advice from a qualified legal professional and/or her state Board of Nursing; this is far beyond the scope of our practice as RNs and LPNs.

I'm sorry, but this thread needs to be closed. Good luck to you and your friend.
