I need career advice about hospice

Published

Hi everyone,

Ive been a nurse 2 yrs now, and have tried a few things like home care, OR and now Acute rehab,(vent patients). I am not happy where i am although i have learned alot. I am going for a second interview for a 12 bed hospice facility close to my home. Its only a couple of years old and looks like a hotel. The hours are better for me and my family and its only every 3rd weekend. I have been reading alot of hospice posts and most people seem to love it. It seems like a layed back atmosphere, they said i would have 6 patients per shift., some may be respite. Ive never done postmortem care. I'm not sure what to do? I just want to find a job to be happy, the rehab works me like a dog. HELP!

I know nothing about inpt Hospice, but 6 actively dying pts doesn't sound very reasonable to me, I could be wrong, I would imagine all the time needed to care for them, probably total care, managing sx, and of course the family would be a lot

thanks for the advice. I liked the inhouse hospice, but the director made me feel that this would be more acute then my floor, in which i take care of 6 vent patients, some whom do crash. I didnt get the feel she was intereseted in me, think she was looking for nurses whom have done the hospital for 20 yrs and want a quieter job. Well things happen for a reason so I just chalk it up to that. I am ment to be where i am ment to be.

I am one of those nurses who were in the hospital for 20+ yrs looking for better hours and less insanity.. that being said, I have found that in Home Hospice, I think you should wait to see what other nurses experienced in inpt hospice would be able to evaluate if your pt load would be reasonable or not. If not, you may want to think about the HH Hospice field, as you will have lots of one on one time, and tremendous satisfaction, and barring on-call, would have very good, family friendly flexible hours. Our agency has permanent off hour on-call people, rarely do the nurses who work during the week have to do it, just for vacas and such. We also have a regular weekend baylor team ( of which I am one) which is great for them since they don't have to do weekends either-- just some food for thought, Good Luck!

hi grumpy

I think I would go back to regular home care, rather then hospice home care. I know the paperwork is a killer. But if i could find some in my area.

One day at a time, everytime i cant stand my job i have a good nite, and think I can stick it out longer.
