I am currenting a nursing student who is doing a feedback essay on nurses, which will require me to ask a few interview questions. If anyone have the time and could help me, I would greatly appreciate it.
What motivates you on a job?
There are several things that motivate me on my job. Mostly when I know I helped a patient with something crucial to their recovery. It can be small by just lending an ear to listen to whatever is bothering them to running to and responding to a code.
Why did you choose to be a nurse? I actually always wanted to go to vet school, but marriage and kids came. I come from a family of nurses, there are 4 of us in all and my sister and brothers(one is a nurse, one a doc) encouraged me to go.
Why did you choose to apply with the organization your currently working for?
I live in a rural area coming from a large metro hospital. The facility I work at is a level 2 trauma center but a level 1 cardiac center. I actually work with the cardiac thoracic surgeon that I worked with 10 years ago even though this hospital is over 90 min away.
How well are you doing in your present job?
Well, I'm a charge nurse of a critical care unit and told often by the docs I keep this place ticking. I also train new nurses from critical care and stepdown. We are a connected with the sdu and everyone is cross trained. So I think I am valued here.
What assets/ skills/ strength do you have?
I'm great at assessment, and iv insertion. I'm a hard worker, bit of a perfectionist and a good teacher. I don't mind pulling long hours if staffing is low
What kind of education do you have?
I got my rn from shadyside hospital in pgh, went to penn state university for my bachelor and plan on working on my masters some day...
What is a typical day like for you?
I clock in, get report on all the patients on the icu floor and step down. I also take an small assignment either in icu(2) or sdu(5-7) Our lpns pass our meds but we are responsible for iv meds. I round with cardiology on both units and round with our critical care doctor on icu with pharmacy, students. I check all crash carts. There is 2 on sdu and one on Icu. I respond to all codes in the hospital except or and er.
What are your duties as a nurse? I think I answered that above.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Honestly, not sure. I like nursing but there are other avenues I am pursueing such as my husband and I are planning on opening a business.
What are the repsonsibility of a nurse?
The nurse is responsible I swear for everything! It's up to the rn to oversee the plan of care and makes sure each dept carries it out. It can't always be done but most of the time if the docs are in sync with you it makes the job easier.
What happen is a patient faints, refuses meds, etc.? The patient has rights and if they are oriented they have the right to refuse treatment. I make sure I notify them of the consequences and if they still want to refuse, I notify the doctors involved.
If a patient faints do the basics make sure you do your abc's. Check air way to make sure they are breathing, what's going on the cardiac monitor if they are on one, check the pulse and get a set of vitals. If they still ore not responding then have one of the nurses call the doctor while one monitors the patient. We will sometimes grab some smilling salts(ammonia capsule)
What is the most difficult problem you have encountered in your present job? Why?
Families! Most families don't understand our workload, stress level of a nurse. They expect things done for their family now, no matter what I'm doing sometimes.
How did you deal with it?
I try to talk with families, let them know the game plan of the day and assess whatever problems they are having and try to meet them if reasonable(some are just not).
What certification is required? I have cpr, acls, pals and ccrn certification
