I need advise!!!!

Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi!

I'm currently enrolled in my fist semester of Pre-requisites at a CC. The nursing program, like elsewhere, is very competitive. So I'm looking at a year of pre requisits + maybe a year of waiting and then 2 more years of Nursing = 4 years for an Associate degree. However, I found out about this school, that has the nursing program in 15 months, the pre-requisits are included in those months. They are accredited for I don't remember what commission board, but they are. BUT, and it's a HUGE BUT their credits won't be accepted for any other school if I wanted to get my bachelor or MSN later on. So here I am wondering whether I should go there or not. I really need to finish my career already, I'm 24 and I want to have babies, and I think that 28 or 29 is too late for me to start having them. What would you do if you were in my position?????????????????? Would you wait or go to this school instead and finish earlier??? Thanks for any advise. They will be highly appreciated.

You are not to old to have babies until you reach the age of 35 (Advanced Maternal Age) and still, tons of women have babies after that. Follow your heart. If a BSN is something you really want to consider, I would hold off for the program that will transfer credits. I would never close the door on a future degree. You have 3 choices where I am from. You can go LPN to RN, then BSN or ADN to BSN. You have to look at the whole picture. I have been an LPN for 15 years and I am trying to get my BSN. Good Luck with your decision!

I don't know if I should be offended by some of your comments or just laugh. I'm 28 yrs old and about to start an Accelerated BSN program. It's a 15 month program and I will graduate a few weeks before my 30th birthday. I don't have any children yet, but still plan to have them after NS. Nowadays, older women are starting families, and it's OK!

Now back to your dilemma with school. You may want to look into other schools, that don't have a waiting list. I understand your frustration, I first graduated with my B.A. at age 23 and I thought that was old. I would hold out for the BSN if I were you since that's what you really want.

It sounds like you're wanting to go to a for-profit technical school. Do you mind telling us which school you're wanting to attend? We could guide you better with that information.

Also, I put in bold one of the things you should be concerned about. Any 'ol agency can offer accreditation, but if it's not a recognized accrediting agency, it's worthless. You want regional accreditation along with an accreditation that allows you to sit for the NCLEX.

I personally believe that any school that wouldn't transfer your credits to a reputable college/university, is worthless. The reason the university won't accept those credits is because the education you receive there is considered inferior.. or at best questionable.

The 'shortcut' may be a costly mistake.. and may not get you were you want to be in your life.

I was 30 when I got pregnant with my first child... I definitely recommend waiting too. Having said that, I really don't think there is anything wrong with her wanting to have them younger. For HER, she feels starting at 28 or 29 is too late. It's a personal thing.. I don't think that means us oldies were wrong for having babies a little later. ;0)

I would never tried to offend anyone. Women can choose at what age they want to have their kids, but from where I am people start having children around the age of 20. I know here is different and women don't start having them until they are 30, which I find it is the better option, but still I want to have them no to far from now. So it is just a personal decision. In my case I don't want to be 29 and not have a baby. But don't get me wrong, I'd never tried to imply that anyone is too old to have kids.

A 15-month program that includes pre-reqs but won't transfer to any other school sounds like some kind of for-profit tech school ripoff. As somebody else said, there is a reason why no other school will take their credits- they provide an inferior education. What I would do is stay at the CC, do the pre-reqs there while you're on the waiting list. You will need additional "elective" credits when you want to do an RN-BSN transition, so take those electives now (credits are cheapest at CC anyway). You can also get your CNA license and start working as a CNA to get hospital experience and your foot in the door, while you wait to enter NS. I would just stay far, FAR away from any for-profit programs. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. (and you can have babies whenever you want, you don't have to wait to finish nursing school)
