Published

I have recently moved to Houston, Tx and I am very eager to get started in my career as a pedatric nurse. Can anyone please give me advice on how to get started from the first step to the last? Community colleges?? hospitals that offer diplomas "earn while you learn" Grants?? I am a 24 yr old single mother.. and I realllyyy want to work in the childrens area, or the plastic surgery area. Any information will greatly be appreciated! I am completly clueless on how to get started!

Thanks so much!

Welcome to Houston!

Your first step should be to explore all the different nursing program in the area. There are no diploma (hospital based programs) - these are pretty much 'extinct' in Texas. There are community colleges that have ADN programs and 4 year schools with BSN programs. Get information on all of the programs - pre-requisites and eligibility requirements, program curriculum, etc. You can find out about avenues of financial aid from the college advisors. I would strongly caution you against taking out any type of private loan. Many people work while going to school. Basic nursing degrees are all generalist in nature, so there is not way to specialize in a particular area until after you graduate and get your license.

Competition is fierce to get into any of the programs. Your GPA is a very important factor, along with your score on any required entrance examinations. You are undoubtedly looking at a couple of years before you can actually start - but it may take you that long to complete all your pre-requisite courses. Good Luck!
