So I wrote a post b4 about 2 job offers. The nursing assistant job offer on the telemetry/med surg. floor at a hospital was offered to me last Wednesday. The medical assistant cardiology job was offered to me this week Wednesday...and I am supossed to have my answer for them tomorrow! Well I kinda agreed to the hospital job, but the cardiolgy job was offered to me so I have to let them know. I dont know what to do...I seriously need a sign to tell me what to do. I dont know what Im going to do if I still dont know tomorrow! I went to school for medical assisting, but am not sure how much of my skills (not that my teacher gave me much practice), I would use as a nursing assistant. I heard that you can learn alot on a telemetry/med surg. floor though (I honestly dont know..the hospital didnt tell me any details about duties/benefits). I dont want to **** the hospital off...the lady sounded annoyed when I mentioned the other job offer yesterday to her. when I was asking if she can tell me some more info..but she was not much help! I went through alot at the college (I got screwed pretty much), and my graduation is next Sunday. I just wish I could walk across the stage with the right decision made (that will work out better in the long run). The hospital offered me $11.65hr with benefits that they didnt explain, and that is 5 minutes away if that driving. The cardiology office starts you out at $12hr. and offers benefits not really explained to me (might not be the greatest). The hospital would be 7-3 part time for now at least until I can bid for full time rotating weekends/holidays. The cardiology office is spssed to open from 8-5 M-F FOR NOW AT LEAST but one Dr. "thinks" they start at 730..so it would be hard for me to make it there that early. The thing is my mom kept on telling me to go to the cardiology interview (I was going to cancel), but now shes saying its too far..since she would have to drive me for a while. I would give her money. I feel like she does everything for everyone else but me, and they dont offer her anything. I dont know if it was closer if it would make it any easier to make a decision?! I just wish I had more info to go off of, and that I could know what would be better. Please what would you do? I dont know if I even have a choice..I cant really have a conversation with my mom..shes just weird like that.

you just answered your question....go with the hospital:up:
SOOOOOOOOOOO...I think I am going to take the hospital nursing assistant job. Oh I am dreading calling up the cardiology office and telling them no. Does this sound right if I tell them "I would really love to work there, but its not going to work out like I thought is was going to at this time due to transportation issues...,and I would appreciate if you could keep me in mind in the future. Im just hoping I make the right decision !!!!!!!! For once in my life I need things to work out. I just spent the last 3 years in college! By the way, my sister just found out (she was supposed to a while ago for me)..that her friends mom is an RN on the same floor. Well I hope she heard it right..but that would be cool...she said be willing to work and no whining (she told her daughter to tell my sister)...but shell take care of me?! The thing that sucks though..my sister didnt get to finish finding out the duties from the mom...but she said I dont think I would be doing ekg's..which I was kinda looking forwarded to/heard I might do. All she started to say was baths and vitals. I just want to use my education (medical assisting). Hopefully my sister can find out more from her friend soon. If not ekg's what else would a na do on a telemetry/med surg. floor, because I really dont know anymore and the hospital never explained yet. Wish me luck!
good luck, let us know how did it go :)

A little advice. Next time you interview with someone ask the following questions....
What is the rate of pay and the schedule for increases?
What are the opportunities for advancement?
What are the benefits......health/dental/vision/401K ect?
What are the hours? Would I ever be on call?
How many holidays am I expected to work?
How much time am I given for vacation/personal time?
What type of training opportunites can I expect.
What are the duties of the position and can I have a written copy (they all have one)
How many patients on average will I care for?
I am a hospital NA on a med/surg unit. It is a lot different than medical assisting. In my job I do the following.
Pass breakfast/lunch/dinner trays
Feed
Record input and output
Empty cathethers
Bathe/change gowns
Oral care
Vitals and record
Transport to Xray
Run to the lab/pharmacy
Follow procedures to care for people with bed sores.
Answer call bells. MANY MANY CALL BELLS
Assist the nurses with anything they ask.
Give bedpans
Clean bedpans
Change patients who wear diapers/briefs
Take urine and stool samples
Wipe down and sanitize equipment.
Change out linens/make beds
This is just a sampling of what I do. In my hospital we don't do EKG's or draw blood. I'm lucky to sit down 15 minutes a day.
Personally, if I spent 3 years in school for medical assisting I would JUMP at the chance to work as a medical assistant in an office:yeah:. Hospital work (as well as long term care facility work) is hard and demanding.
Give me a job in a medical office ANY day.
Good luck.

Well when I asked the recruiter about duties, she didnt even know. She looked up the ad online (which I read before of course). She agreed it was very vague. She said benefits etc. will be discussed if your hired, which they havent told me anything yet. Its not 100% that I dont want the office job, its just due to transportation issues, it is not going to work out like it was supposed to (even though I would like to work there in the future..if they would consider me), The hospital is closer. It sucks...but I have to tell them my decision today.

If you plan on going on to RN, I would say you definitely made the right decision. You will have described duties (as listed by CNANY). Once you become proficient with those, it would not hurt to ask/try new things, like phlebotomy, simple wound care, anything else that you see that you might be able to do w/o a license.
Above all, learn from the RNs. If it is a good place to work, an eagerness to learn will be encouraged, and the facility will be likely to support you if you want to go back to school in a couple of years.

I dont really know if I would go for RN..I could of by now (3 years in college). I know I only need 6 classes for the LPN though. maybe I can get a Medical Assistant job in the same system someday since I am a CMA...or it would be nice to be trained to do other duties (which would hopefully increase pay), but Im not sure if the hospital does training yet.

Be glad you have such a choice. This hick town I live in has very few choices for CNA's other than LTC facilities where you get guaranteed hours of hard labor, or home health where you don't get guaranteed hours and have to drive long distances for assignments.
