Just had to put that out there. I love my staff and my school. The math coach just stopped by and gave me a ton of little science reader activity books to use for students waiting for parent pickip. The special ed teacher has also given me a bunch of little story books. My new principal is a real go-getter and has turned the school from a good one with a lot of negativity (mostly due to the former principal's unresponsiveness) into a GREAT school full of smiling staff, faculty, and students and a school that radiates positivity. Even when challenges arise, the attitude of teamwork prevails. Yes, this is a job worth a 46 mile one-way commute for!
Had to brag on my co-workers, even if they won't see it (I am always sure to tell them, also!)

The culture of the school comes from the top down. My last school was violent, aggressive and chaotic all day. I took care of several kids daily who had been in fights, serious fights, at school. My current school is sweet, kind, patient and cooperative. Yesterday I had my very first(in 6 months) kid who was bitten during a fight--and the perpatrator turned out to be the victims brother. My current school is so far ahead of my old school, they're not even in the same race. Interesting thing though: the demographics are the same. Poor, disconnected, lots of substance abuse, gang violence in the neighborhood, parents who don't read or speak English, many fractured and dislocated families. AT my old school, finding weapons was a game, like an easter egg hunt. You knew they were there and you never could tell where they'd turn up. At this school, the most popular "weapon" seems to be the swing set.
It is truly amazing the difference good leadership can make!
