I'm living in a dorm next year and I'm afraid of cigarette smoke. The blue area is where people are allowed to smoke. The pink area is where I will be living. If our windows are open, is that a far enough distance that it won't get in?

It is technically off campus but it is through the college because tuition and housing bills are together. It said it was a non-smoking dorm and I was not aware that people are allowed to smoke right by the door or I would not have signed :(

Honestly, if the lease is still through the college, I'd argue it based on the rather misleading description and your medical history and needs. Particularly if the school is a public one, in my experience they are usually fairly responsive to issues pertaining to ADA needs/requirements (mostly because they're rather fearful of the consequences). If not, you could always try contacting your regional office of the Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights ADA division for assistance. I'm not saying they'd be able to help you, but it's worth a shot.

The dorm is smoke-free except for designated areas outside. They moved me so that my window faces the street and not the entrance where people smoke. Any better?

This is probably about the best accommodation you can expect. Now hopefully you find that it is sufficient.

Am I putting myself in danger? My grandmother died of lung cancer and it scares me.
