Well, i am kinda new to this site and i want to become an LPN. Now i dont know what tthis would be considered as, b/c b4 it was a major problem for me in deciding whether or not i wanted to go into the nursing field. Too make a long story short, i had a stroke when i was 4 paralyzing me on my right side, now i can walk talk i drive a car with no special equipment, i have a full time job, the only thing that resulted from me having the stroke is my right hand isnt fully functional, it stays closed all the time. i am 22 years old and i regret not going to nursing school straight out of high school, but i have realized that the only thing holding me back is myself! But what i do want to know from other nurses out there is there anyone or yourself included that has a physical disability and that strived to become a nurse? what were the obstacles (if any) that you has to over come? was there ever a point when u just wanted to throw in the towel?
Thanks to everyone who takes time to read this and/or reply . . .:monkeydance:
I think im just nervous about it . . . . anyone can give me feedback . . it would help tremendously

I have worked with several nurses that have had disabilities. One was involved in a mva and had a brain injury, she was slow in her speech, but knew what she was doing. The other nurse had either ms or md, anyway, she had a difficulty time walking.......or at least it looked that way.....I worked in CCU with both these nurses. Both were excellent at what they did.

hi there! I am so glad that you are thinking of becoming a nurse and I think you definitely should go for it!
I know you say you regret not going to school straight from highschool, but life experience that you already have will make you so much stronger and ready to do a good job in school.
I think the difficult part may come in gogin through with competencies, where fine motor skills are used quite a bit, but since you have been adjusting to your limited hand mobility since young age, I am sure you can figure out a way to do it.
Speak with nursing instructors at the school where you will be going and get some idea about what the competencies will be like. You whould be able to get extra time on that test as well.
I also worked with several nurses who have disabilities, our nuclear medicince tech has CP and still really doing well.
good luck, Natasha
Thank you both so much for telling me that, it really boosted my confidence alot, and i plan on enrolling this september for an LPN Program.
Have a good day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with the others; go for it. Nursing is a very large field; there is room for you, if your heart is in it. Good luck.
