I have to insert a Catheter into a female Geriatric patient whom is feeling anxiety

Published

How can I ease her anxiety? She said it is because one of the LPNs had hurt her when she had to have the catheter inserted last time, please share your tricks with me.

to make this pain free for both her and myself

This is my very first live catheter insertion:uhoh21:

to be honest if she is very anxious about this procedure because of a bad experience as a qualified nurse I would probably not delegate this to a student, she is going to need to know that this experience will be better than the last and if it is your first attempt you are not going to be able to give her the confidence that you will be able to do this. Therefore she is going to be anxious.

I would say for a first attempt this may not be the best choice of patient.

If you are going to have to do it anyway, be confident and caring, I would not neccassarily tell her it is your first attempt. With my patients with procedures they are anxious about because of a previous experience I usually ask if I can look and reassure them that if I feel it is to difficult for me to perform I will not even attempt it, if I feel it will be an easy procedure only then will I proceed.

They then have the confidence and trust in you to know your limitiations and stop if you are unsure you will be able to succeed,

How long is she waiting for this catheter that you have time to post about it?

I'm conuzzled.

lololololol... delayed cath awaiting replies ...loloool

lol, she has a catheter changed q6h

or once amonth.

So she's straight cathed 4x a day or Foley'd once a month? Whish is it?

Honeybee, if this is part of your homework just say so. Because otherwise this is utter nonsense.

it says on her care plan that she has catheter to be changed q6h or to keep a foley in permanantely and change once a month

Now I feel like a real moron, it is as tho you think I am trying to waste your time and everyone elses.

Sorry but this is the information I got, as part of research. It is not homework it is a case study.

I am new at this sort of thing.

If you are being asked to pass your first catheter into a very anxious patient I would say it would be inappropriate.

You need your first procedure of this type to be in a patient who is not anxious about the procedure if nothing else it is unfair to put the patient in the hands of a complete novice for a procedure that causes so much anxiety.

Leave it to the experienced nurses and find a patient who is not so anxious.

yes, I believe this is most reasonable, but I do have an instructor that says that she must receive a catheter from me. Trust me by all means I would love to pass this off to the most experienced. I will talk to my instructor again and maybe this time I can change her mind.

honeybee if this is something that you are going to have to do then look at my first post, be confident and give the patient and yourself the option to pull out if you feel it is too difficult

I will definately go with your advice I think it is really reasonable. Especially for little lady I would have insert a catheter into.

Thank you for your advice;)
