I got a "B" in physio...am i doomed?

Published

I just finished taking physiology and microbiology this past fall and when grades came out...my heart fell...I got an A in micro but a B in physio

I know that it's extremely important to do well in science prereqs (ESPECIALLY anatomy and physiology)...do you guys think I should retake it??

so sad....

Wow, i didn't know that a "B" was bad!

I agree I thought a B was good. There is so many people freaking out because of B's. Last time I checked an A was great and a B was also good too. People need to really think about it for a second. I know a B is fine and professors would agree also. Now if you are on some kind of scholarship that requires you to keep up a 4.0 average then I can understand that, but if you got a B and nothings riding on that be happy with the B or take the class over and try for an A if that helps you sleep better. Good luck

It really, really depends upon which school you're planning on attending. If you're going to a school that places a really strong emphasis on GPA, then yes, I'd retake. If not, don't worry about it too much.

I know people who were thrilled with a C in A&P1 and had no intentions of doing anything but continuing on - but, at our school, it matters when you finish your pre-reqs and get on the list (even though they say they don't have a list, but whatever!) and when you finish your core classes and if you have an overall GPA of 2.5 - that's all that matters. At other schools, you're given points depending upon grades. So, again, it matters what your school says - that's the most important thing.

Thanks everyone for the input and encouragement :D

I panicked for awhile just because I know how competitive nursing programs are (esp. in CA, where I live...I don't even know if i'll apply to any here just because the chances are so slim) and I'm looking mainly into both masters and accelerated second bachelor's degree programs

I am debating now whether to retake it or just to ride w/it and aim for an incredible score on the GRE's...I'm anxious to start applying ASAP but I still have a few more semesters to go (I still need to take ochem, biochem and speech/public spkg)...

If you were in my shoes, what would YOU guys do?

Thanks again for the input!!!

It depends what the rest of your application looks like. I really think its unlikely that a B in physio would hold you back from getting in anywhere on its own. Also, you dont have to take Ochem and biochem necessarily. I didnt take them and I was able to apply to a lot of programs (UCLA, UCSF, Western, Univ of San Diego, Univ of san francisco, Cal state long beach, etc etc). It could risk you lowering your GPA. just food for thought. But yea if it were me I wouldnt retake physio, not worth it. Good Luck

plus some schools are taking away points for repeats. My school takes away 5 pts for any repeats.

How does the rest of your grades look? If you've only got this one B in A&P you should be fine.

@sandman - yes, a lot of the CA programs dont require ochem/biochem, but i do know that they're super competitive so I'm looking into other options (mainly masters programs), which do happen to require them. I'd rather NOT take them but it does increase my options significantly if i do. i definitely took the fact that they may lower my GPA into consideration, but I concluded that I wanted to broaden my options as much as possible. did you apply recently?? Good luck!!!

@want2banurse - ooo i did NOT know this at all! I just assumed retaking a course showed schools you were serious...thanks for the heads up!

@tokyorose - the rest of my prereqs look pretty ok, but my undergrad GPA...not so much, haha.

Although everyone loves an A, if you got a B and you really worked hard for that B, then I think you should be happy and just move on. There are plenty of people that got B's and still got into nursing school.

I got a B in both A&P1 and A&P2 but I am trying not to get discouraged. If I don't get into a program this year then I'll re-take the classes before I apply the following year. A nursing student friend of mine told me that all A's in the prereqs was crucial, but then again, she's not on the admissions committee.
