Yesterday,I failed my skills on one single issue; hand washing. If someone practices a skill for 5 weeks and performs it in professional clinical settings satisfactorily and yet it is failed because I missed two steps, there is a problem. I messed up on two steps in hand washing which is 10 steps so I still had 80% on hand washing and still failed. Neither of the two steps messed were a critical step. I passed everything else with satisfactory but failed clinical because I didn't make 90% on hand washing. Neither the Rn nor the other two teachers have ever seen a person fail from missing two non-critical steps in hand washing. I'm writing a letter of Grievance explaining what happened hoping I won't have to spend Eighty-five dollars for a retest. In my skill book, Candidate will be allowed to retest at no additional cost if an error was made by the evaluator. I don't see this is an errors of hers and an error of the people who does the cut-off for scoring. Both the Rn testing me and my teacher were not happy with the results of my test. Has anyone ever heard of this happening or has every happened to you?
Thanks,
Liz

What were the errors you made specifically on handwashing?
I missed steps one and three which are address client by name and introduces self to client by name and wet hands thoroughly. The address client by name and introduce self is only one step. Neither steps missed were a critical, in bold black. hopes this information helps.
Hmm. You are allowed a certain number of mistakes. If you did every other skill 100% perfectly, you should have passed in theory. BUT, if you made additional errors, then it makes sense you would fail. It cannot hurt to try and question the results. What do you have to lose, right? Is handwashing a critical step in itself though? (Every state is different) Worse comes to worse, you take the test again. Look at it this way, you won't make those errors again! Good luck :)
On my test paper the other skills had Satisfactory marked beside them and no information about what I missed on the other skills. On washing washing, number 5 and 7 are critical steps: (5) lather all surfaces of wrists, hands, and fingers producing friction, for at least 20 seconds, keeping hands lower than the elbows and fingertips down. (7) rinse all surfaces of wrists, hands, and fingers keeping hands lower than the elbows and the fingertips down. You are right, I can take it again but I don't feel the test results were fair. Sorry, I get a bit down and out. I am currently working on improving my life and starting over after being stuck in an abusive relationship for over 10 years. It's been hard and sure it'll get better for me.

Don't feel too bad - I failed my first skills test for not talking to the mannequin. On my second try I had none of the same skills and passed easily.
