I came here to post because I've just felt very sad for the last few days. I graduated in May 2008 and started in the ER at a local hospital. In October I was trying to start an IV on a man who came in and accidently pricked myself! We started all the usual protocol for this type of event as soon as it happened. I continued to be tested, but this Tuesday I got a call from the doc to come in. I'm now HIV+. I know its not the end of the world with all the advance they've made and what not, but I'm still very sad...especially since I've always dreamed of being a mother to many children. This may also affect my work. I've been on approved leave since finding out. Just had to vent about this guys. Thanks.
I'm very sorry to hear of this rare occurence.
Ditto for all the posts about the advances in treatment, it's true. And I hope that a HIV prevention protocol was at least attempted. This protocol includes using a fusion or entry inhibitor immediately (within an hour) and in combination with other HIV drugs for 30 days after.
Best wishes and I hope your work place continues to support you.
Sarah, ...be assured that every professional caregiver who read this or hears of your situation will keep you in their thoughts, with a fervent hope for the best possible health outcome for you. That event could happen to any of us who deal with the public--nurses, paramedics, technicians and doctors--and we are a family who supports and grieves for our own in tough times. Blessings upon you
Sarah
I am so sorry this happened to you. BUT it does NOT affect your ability to be a Mom. Keep those viral load levels down and you can have a lady partsl birth. I know this seems like the end of the world right now and frankly I think everyone feels that way until they can mourn their "old" life and adjust to the new version. Please keep in mind you can still be a Mom and have an active meaningful life.
Hugs

I wanted to give you HOPE! A Pastor I knew 25 years ago had gotten HIV from Tx for hemophilia in the 80's. His brother got it too, same way. The Pastor had just married when they found out. They were devastated and had NO idea what the future would hold. He took Tx and is STILL Preaching today AND him and his wife have Adopted at least 5 forster children that I know of. These people made great parents to children no one wanted! You do not know what God has in the direction of your life.
I was stuck by a needle after a blood draw by a women who had gotten 48 transfusions that year. She tested negative for HIV and died. They lost my blood and I am suppose to be retested. God Bless you!
I am so sorry to hear this. My thoughts and prayers are with you.#1-Get tested again.
#2-Where the results are reliable or not I would switch to as healthy and organic a lifestyle as you can.
#3-You can still have children and a family! With the advances today you can live a long and healthy life.
Yes Sarah,
I agreed above. Please do so. My prayers are with you always. God bless.
I'm so sorry to hear this. I was thinking this could be me, as I will graduate this May 2009 and I am also 23. That's my biggest fear as a nurse working and contracting some sort of incurable disease. I am a firm believer that "If God will bring you to it he will bring you through it".
It's easy to say don't worry when you're not the person, but with faith, prayer and medical attention you will be fine!!
Hello, I have read most of these posts, they sound as if your gonna die soon, your not...not anytime soon! And yet how am I to know? I Don't...Many people, as you know, die everyday...you could die just driving to work, running, eating chicken. The variety of death is immense, you know have HIV, it will change your path...Maybe for the better :). Stick in there, you made it through school, the nclex, and finding a job, you can overcome this little obstacle with ease! Take care of yourself, if your near a beach, go swimming, its always helped me when I have troubleing times. :roll

I am so sorry to hear that. We are all at risk no matter how good we take care of ourselves. I am a psych nurse and I don't give a lot of injections, however when we have patients go off and bite someone we don't know what they have. My prayers are with you.
