I can taste that

Published

I've had a few patients tell me that they could "taste" the IV meds that I'm giving them. Anybody else heard of this? What is the cause?

To me, Zofran gives me a metallic taste, Toradol tastes like hairspray ( or smells) morphine makes my nose itch and has a funny smell and saline I can smell. Versed gave me an interesting taste as well. I always warn my patients when I give them any of these meds just from personal experience. IT helps them cope with it and they appreciate knowing as well.

I can taste/smell the saline when an IV is started on me. It is somewhere between a taste and a smell -- it originates deep in the back of my throat so it really isn't hitting my taste buds, but it must be stimulating the nerves.

My hubby has had several surgeries and outpatient procedures. He swears he can smell the saline flushes, says it's an antiseptic/mediciney kind of smell. I just had a patient who swore she got a taste from saline, when I mentioned my hubby to her, she said it was more of a smell than a taste now that she started thinking about it. Never heard of it before, but it seems to be true.
