after all that...I amy not be able to maintain my commission!

Pasting my own post

Hello,

I have another question regarding this "Active Duty on Reserve commission" that I have.

I am four months away from my MS entry to nursing graduation and due to the timeline in my homestate for the NCLEX-RN testing to state licensure I will not be able to make OBLC for this fall. Bummer.

However, since I have been a full-time student and living off of my student loans throughout this program I will be in a bind upon completion of my program because of a few reasons. They are:

1-immediately upon NCLEX testing I will not be able to work as a Patient care tech or UAP

2-it is dubious to find an employer for six months, especially as a new nurse graduate

3-I am self-supporting and without my loans or employment I will not be able to afford my rent/phone/auto insurance...

4-upon graduation my student loans, (1K a month) become another bill

5-I prefer not to sit around in limbo for 6+ months

So, initially I was planning on further my education as an adjunct to being Active Duty Military and going for two online programs.

This would serve the dual reasons of 1-further my education towards the FNP and 2-keeping my loans in active student status deferrment.

However, now that I will be in limbo, due to not being re-commissioned Active Duty and not being at training I will still need to maintain myself here in Chicago.

So...I am thinking to keep on in my current program working towards the Post master's FNP or Adult NP certificate.

In order to complete it, I'd need nine months, not six.

Anyone know how I go about trying to secure permission to go to OBLC upon my "new" program completion?

As much as this sucks it seems like I will not be able to hang on in limbo for so long in order to actually maintain my commission.

After having been a student and so on I do not have the financial means to be "independant" while I wait for the next OBLC, (january 08). My current timeline has me graduating in June 16th, testing for NCLEX around July 16 and then receiving the license possible after the August OBLC start.

Thanks,

Sigh...

Good luck Gen. Know you are anxious to get your military career as well as your nrsg career going. That must make for double anxiety!

Thanks JaxiaKiley and Caliotter,

Its just that my recruiter, new to AMEDD, is really clueless I think.

I am not sure why he has done things or had me do things and I suspect it is why my application had to go to the board three times!

Also, had he honestly told me that I could indeed to Active Duty in the Army up to age FORTY SIX and not 42 like he said, and that I could not get in upon graduation but would have to wait six months, then I would have waited to sign my contract until the date of entry and my bonuses were changed.

He "had" told me if I don't pass NCLEX that they will ship me off as enlisted, (wrong).

He "had" me take NCLEX, claiming it would show my eligibility for nurse candidate program, (oh so wrong).

He is now telling me that I will be shipped automatically within three to four months of receiving my license, (wrong, they don't have orders or a pcs for me and OBLC cannot take me for six months following my graduation).

So, since I must fund myself here I will need to get a job. I do not want to use a hospital for only six months, as a new nurse, and then leave. Also, I do not want to stop my program to sit in limbo while my loans become due...

He "is" telling me to lie to my school, to lie to my work and to just lie, lie, lie.

No thank you. He had told me to lie to meps too but, I didn't listen to him then either.

He seems highly unethical, misinformed and I do not trust my contract to him.

I am calling the Air Force while I wait for the Army to get back to me, grrr.

Gah! I wouldn't want to work with someone who was encouraging me to lie. Is there any way you can work with someone else so late in the game?

I am trying. Thankfully someone at the AMEDD recruitment website is requesting to look into it.

Sigh, I was really hoping to be set to go yet, if he would have been honest then I would have changed my date of entry in the first place.

Gah is right JaxiaKiley. I am grateful for you guys letting me vent through this hoo haa!

I do not want to relinquish the commission but, if forced I am not sure if I would just go ahead and quit both the NP program and a six month hospital job in order to maintain the commission and go to OBLC in January.

Here is to hoping to re-submitt a new contract with a new date of entry.

Meanwhile I asked that AF HP to give me a call, to see what options the AF would consider. Seems that if the Army releases me then the AF can indeed consider me.

I will try to avoid posting the blow by blow and will update when I know for sure if the ANC will elt me resubmit the date of entry.

Finger crossed smiley,

Sorry all of this is happening to you before you even start. I would think that with the increased need for qualified people, they would make a better effort to do things efficiently and correctly. You are not supposed to find out how messed up things can be until you are already in! Maybe, you better check with our Navy friend also! Hope things straighten out and work in your favor.

I don't mind a blow-by-blow. I check often for updates to see how things are going for you!

Hi,

Yeah, it is an "eventful" application process for sure!

If I were not beyond the maximum age requirements for the Navy I would apply and would have applied. My father was a Marine and my first ex fiance was a sailor...so my hopes were high but, too old.

Meanwhile an AF former health professions recruiter told me that the Army can and should be able to amend my contract and if they refuse to, then to go ahead and walk and go to the AF NC.

Hoping things work out smoothly.

Hi Gen,

I've been busy with school and haven't visited the board much lately. I'm so sorry about all of this you're having to go through!!!! It sounds like your recruiter is a little shady...good thing you have the initiative to follow-up with someone else. The Army is really making you work for that job aren't they!? Hang in there. I'll be sending you good-luck vibes.

Gen: Have you looked at what the AF has to offer in detail? When I was with the military, there was a general "rule of thumb" that the AF treated their personnel better. If the AF could offer you something comparable or better than what you were supposed to be getting from the Army you might want to change your plans anyway. Like when we look for jobs in the civilian world, many people take the first job offered (usually anticipating that there will not be other offers or that no one else is enthusiastic about hiring them or b/c they just can't wait forever). In your case, maybe the AF can better accommodate your need for immediate active duty. Just a thought. Good luck again. We're with ya!
