Husband relocating to SF Area

My husband got promoted at work and his company is based in Santa Clara so therefore we will be relocating to SF. We are excited!!!! He is over the moon. I'm an RN/BSN wiith 2 yrs experience working in a Post Open Heart Stepdown Unit in a big city hospital in Washington DC. I had just got hired as an ER nurse at a local hospital but couldn't start because he got promoted. :( Boo hoo!! I'm hoping to find an ER job in the SF area. I don't know much about hospitals in the area. I've looked on the internet etc at different hosp in area but it's wierd not knowing much about each hospital.

I've been reading posts and see that many new grads are looking for jobs. Will it be hard for me to find a job since there so many new grads looking too? Should I find a recruiter to help? Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

UCSF and CPMC are good. SF General is busy. East Bay: Highland is a zoo but in a good way.

South: Stanford in Palo Alto, San Jose Regional in SJ, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in SJ.

A recruiter can definitely do the work for you, it couldn't hurt to try using one.

Thanks Tazzi. Do you know of any recruiters? Thanks for the list of hospitals. I hadn't even heard of some of them. Do you know long it will take to get my CA license? Here it takes 8wks.

I sent the info PM. I will start looking into those hospitals. We are looking at living in Dublin, San Ramon or Pleasanton area. Coworkers told us to look there.

You might want to look at a map. Santa Clara is south east of San Francisco. It's about 1 hour to commute one way. I would suggest you look at hospitals around the peninsula (closer to Santa Clara) like Stanford (Palo Alto), Kaiser Santa Clara, El Camino Hospital (Mtn View), Good Samaritan (San Jose/Los Gatos), O'Connor (San Jose/Los Gatos), or San Jose Regional (San Jose). Or you could look at Sequoia Hospital (Redwood City). Because you have 2 years of nursing experience, you are considered "experienced" instead of a new grad. You will not have any problems finding a job in the San Francisco Bay Area. Good luck!

Thanks Smile123. That is really helpful. If we live in Pleasanton, SR, or Dublin area, will commuting to places south of SF be far? Right now where I live I commute 40mins each way. I would like to cut my commute time down if possible. If not, that's okay but if I have the choice, I would like to. Secondly, since you said I'm experienced but I want to change specialities to ER, do you think it will be hard to find a job since all the new grads are coming out. They will still have to train me but probably not as long. I was an EMT before I became an RN. I do have ACLS. Thanks again. It helps to get hospital names and ideas of where they are. Hopefully hubby and I will be out there in 2 wks to do our first house/area hunt. :)

They will all be a long commute to the South Bay. If you are going to live there and let your husband do the commuting, then SF would be a good choice for a job, but not Pleasanton. Nice area but too far. And I don't know what commutes are like in MD, but in the Bay Area it's horrible. What would take you 15 minutes with flowing traffic in the middle of the day could take you up to an hour during commute times.

Traffic here is bad too but not that bad. If I work an 8 hr shift and leave at 4pm, It usually takes me an hour to get home. On the weekends I can get to work in 30mins. Around here it depends on where you live. Some areas traffic is horrific even during non rush hour.

So are you saying if I live in Pleasanton I should work in SF? Also, I can't find the website for San Francisco General. Hubby doesn't mind commuting.

If you work in SF you should not live in Pleasanton. Too far. San Ramon would be good. Dublin is kind of far. There are some really nice towns just south of SF on Highway 280.
