I have been accepted by all three schools: Hunter, Lehman and New York City College of Technology. I'm a High School senior about to enter one of these schools for Fall 2010. I would like to know more about how many seats they have, and the difficulty of the programs. I've been discouraged a little with the Hunter Program because I've heard that there are few seats and your GPA has to be very high. As well with the Lehman program. City Tech, I'm still iffy on because I haven't heard too much about it. Any information would be helpful.
Thank you for your time. :)

all CUNY progs have few seats and ALOT of people applying, b/c of the $ tag. so if those are the schools in question, make sure you end up w/ a 3.9/4.0 and very high NLN scores..

By accepted to the "school" one presumes you mean into the colleges and will take the pre-nursing sequence, then apply for formal admission into the nursing programs.
Hunter and Lehman have about two years worth of pre-reqs, so allot can change between Fall 2010 and the time you are ready to apply. However in general Hunter's program historically has always been difficult to get into, with students having completed the pre-nursing sequence with GPAs of anywhere between 3.0 to 4.0 not making in on their first attempt. Recently Hunter as with most if not all CUNY nursing programs have now added the NLN or similar exam as part of the application process, perhaps this was done in response to so many applicants all having excellent grades.
The thing about all CUNY programs is ones application into a nursing program competes with the number and caliber of other students applying for the same class. If for some reason demand (applications) drops, then even lesser students stand a shot.
Hunter, as well as other CUNY nursing programs seem to be making changes (as with the recent NLN exam addition to the process), often, so what is in place now may not apply by the time you apply.
In any even would strongly urge you to keep your GPA at 3.5 or above for the pre-nursing sequence and do everything to make yourself a strong applicant.

I know for both Lehman and Hunter, once you get into the school, you still have to apply to their nursing programs and to apply you must be a matriculated student within that college. So as a full time student as Hunter, I could apply for Hunter Bellevue School of Nursing (HBSON) but not Lehman and vice versa. Not sure about City Tech.
Another thing, Hunter and Lehman are BSN programs, so as DoGoodThenGo said, you have 2 years of prereqs and if you get accepted straight away 2 years of nursing courses. City tech is an ASN program which is about 2 years but they do have the RN to BSN pathway (which allows RN's with their associates to obtain their bachelors). Hunter also offers an RN to BSN pathway.
The thing about CUNYs is that because of the tuition, they have a high volume of applicants and so competition is high.
I'm a Hunter grad I'd say that overall it was a great program. To apply, though the application criteria says you must take the NLN pre nursing exam and have a gpa of 2.5 and above, I can tell you that they do not consider anything in that range. In my year, my classmates were mostly 3.3 and above. Doing well on the NLN balances out low a low GPA. For instance I only had a 3.3 but scored really well on my NLN. They do drop the minuses and the pluses of your prereqs. So for instantace, let say you scored a B- in chem, it becomes a B. But I would definitely strive to keep all your nursing pre req courses B and above. Once again, be aware that there are many applicants for HBSON. They did increase the incoming class size from 60 to 100 recently but understand that the more competitive your grades, the higher your chances.
Good luck
Could be wrong, and of course have no way of knowing, but IMHO the recent additon of NLN scores to most if not all CUNY nursing programs came as a way to deal with a huge pool of applicants, many of whom met and or vastly exceeded the 2.5 GPA of the pre-nursing sequence.
Have heard of Hunter pre-nursing students finishing with GPAs ranging from 3.0 to 4.0 and still having to cool their heels for a semester or two because they didn't make it in on their first try. This was a few years ago, and the applicant pool has only increased in reaction to the "nursing shortage" drum beat and job layoffs caused persons to assume nursing is a fool proof paycheck.
The other problem of course is there are so few BSN nursing programs in Manhattan, and with the priviate schools costing a small fortune, Hunter looks like a bargain.

what college did you end up going to?

I heard that NYCCT isn't having NLN pre assessment anymore.. is that true ??
I'm right now doing my pre-req at Hostos and honestly their system of education is crappy, though
my grades are good, above 3.7 gpa. I need advise on how to get in to nursing at NYCCT or Hunter.
What's the minimum requirement for gpa and the nursing entrance exam ?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Do I necessarily need to meet with a nursing advisor before my application has been accepted in to the college or do i wait
till i recv a response from CUNY ??
Thanks much in advance.
