Hunter generic nursing 2021

Published

How did current Hunter nursing students and current pre-nursing students study for the NLN PAX exam? I plan on taking the test next month. I really suck at vocab, so I'm afraid that I won't do well on the verbal section. I feel confident in the math section and okay in the science section. What are your studying tips and resources that you used or are currently using?

I forgot to mention, just to clear up any confusion, each study guide is $25.

The verbal section on the actual test has 6 passages, 5 questions each. For each passage, you must submit the answers to those questions in order to go to the next passage. Once you submit those, you can't go back to check your answers to those questions. You could, however, go back to check your answers to the vocab questions with the remaining time you have.

The same goes for the math and science questions. When you have time left, use the time to go back and check your answers.

As you already know, each section has 40 minutes. Make sure you have a whiteboard and a basic calculator.

And lastly, good luck. I hope you do well. It was such as relief to finally get the test over with, so definitely reward yourself afterward from all that stress and studying. The results come out 4 hours after you finish the test.

 Let me know how it went for you and let's share our stats.

@achc thank you so much for sharing your experience and suggestions! ?????? I really appreciate it. It means a lot to me. You’re a true life saver, I pray for your best and may God full-fill all of your dreams and wishes! ? I will definitely purchase those practice tests. Thanks a lot again for everything. I appreciate so so much...

One last question, how did you study for vocabulary part? My English is terrible. I have no confidence with my vocabulary knowledge. Do you have any suggestions for vocabulary part? Also, I can use MacBook Pro for taking the test, right?

Hey, I am back with another long comment.

No problem, I wish you the best of luck. By the way, the name of the practice tests are called: PAX Prep Science Exam and PAX Prep Verbal Exam. Each is $25, but trust me, it was worth the money.

I actually didn't study for the vocab at all. I originally thought about studying prefixes, affixes, and suffixes, but I eventually gave up on that (studying for vocab). I also tried Quizlet, vocabulary.com, and downloaded some vocab apps, but I didn't find it useful because I had no determination. It is literally impossible to study for the vocab because there could be any word on that test. When I did the practice tests in the red book, I always got about 26 or 30 questions right in the verbal section because I was terrible at vocab. I was just like you, I had zero confidence with vocab.

That was why, I decided to but the $25 practice test for the verbal. The only thing that helped me was the practice tests from there because I did not expect to see vocab questions from that practice test on the actual test. It was a life saver. Just remember the questions and answers to the vocab in the practice test because I had a few of those questions on my actual test. The same goes with the science, try to remember the questions and answers.

I am glad to be of any help to those who need it because I understand the amount of stress and questions people are having, so I am doing what I can to help. Also, remember to manage your time and always go back to check your answers when you can.

To ensure that Hunter college received your score report, just send an email to the testing center (I can't put their email here, but you can always look it up. Look up: Hunter testing center).

About the computer I used to take the test, I used a Windows laptop and used Google Chrome to take the test. I am not sure about MackBook Pro, but I don't think that it should be a problem. Just remember to download this because it is required for the test: https://support.questionmark.com/content/installing-questionmark-secure-mac  (This the Mac version. You can uninstall this after you finish the test because I didn't want to keep this in my laptop.) I am not sure about using Safari to take the test, but I would suggest to use Google Chrome. Make sure, in your Chrome settings, that your pop-up is not blocked. Allow for pop-up for the Zoom when you take the test: https://support.questionmark.com/content/running-questionmark-secure

Also, if you have any other questions, refer to this pdf: https://na158.salesforce.com/sfc/p/#0b000000DYzq/a/5a000000FUQw/M3G8aN_.UzyJXTFngHzN3Aho0DNnH6v17A61jPfxE48

Does anybody know where we should send our scores? I know we have forms to fill but it says we need to give the email address of the institution.

@youngj I am pretty sure that when you registered or created your NLN account, you should have selected Hunter College as the school. Once your exam result comes out, the score report should be automatically sent to the school. I just sent an email to the testing center the next day to make sure that they got my score report and they said that it was automatically received.

Just send the testing center an email asking them if your score report was automatically sent to Hunter College's School of Nursing. They should reply very soon saying that the score report was received.

does anyone know how many people apply to the generic program? I heard close to 1000 freshman + 100 sophomores but that seems like a lot (?) any idea what the acceptance rate is & average stats of admittees?

@deanie I actually don't know but, it is obvious that it is very competitive. As you said, there are applicants from current freshmen and returning applicants from sophomores who did not get in last year. Not everyone has a chance of getting in because even the website said that no one is guaranteed entry into the program. It all depends on how well you do as a student. They look at the GPA and NLN composite score, which you can expect, everyone will have high stats. I have heard from multiple sources that even if you have either a high GPA, high NLN score or a high GPA & NLN score, you may not even get in. However, there were students who got in with low stats. If you are lucky enough, there is a chance that that could happen, but it will be extremely low. Honestly, it all depends on the applicants.

There are also transfer students. They usually go for the accelerated nursing program (A2D: accelerate 2nd degree), which accepts even fewer people, 30 people.

According to the pre-nursing advisor, she said that the average GPA is 3.5 and the average NLN score is 150. Do you mind if I ask, what are your stats?

@deanie I forgot the mention, there are also students from the nursing honors scholar program. Students in that program get immediate entry into the nursing program. All they have to do is just take the prerequisites and pass the classes. They don't have to do the NursingCas application and they don't have to take the NLN-PAX test. I am so jealous of them and if only I had known about that sooner. You can only apply for the honors scholar program at the same time you apply to hunter college as an incoming freshman (in other words, applying as a high school senior).

I don't know how many students are in the honors scholar program, but they are also going for the generic program. Knowing that there are about 100 seats for the generic program, in reality, there are even less seats for students who are not in the honors scholar program.

@achc

I have a 3.8 and 158 PAX score. I'm hoping to get all As to bring my GPA up to a 3.9 by the end of the semester but IDK with orgo?

They told us during orientation that it's 50% GPA and 50% PAX score, but I think they take the essay into consideration too. I heard that some people with 3.8s and 140s weren't getting into the program, but I know someone who had a 3.7 and 134 who's in the program RN. I'm not sure how that's possible unless they count the essay

And yes! I'm honestly mad that I didn't hear about the nursing scholars program sooner

@deanie Your score is AMAZING! Your stats are just as GOOD.

Yeah, I hope that we have a chance. We must stay strong this semester just like in the previous semester.

I agree, I feel okay with all my other classes. I am just having a hard time and hate the Chemistry classes (CHEM 121 and CHEM 120). They make it difficult for no reason, which makes me wonder why people would want to major in Chemistry. It is so hard to understand. Science is literally a whole new language.

@achc Thank you!

I'm taking CHEM 120 and 121 too. I'm assuming you have Amanda too? I'm really struggling; it's completely my fault, but I've been lost since like the second chapter we covered. I'm really so scared for the test on Monay

@youngj @Ety @deanie

Hey guys, I just want to let you know that my advisor told me that we should hear back in around May. If we don't hear back by May, then it could be in June. Good luck with this semester and I hope that we get in.
