Humber/UNB Second entry starting Septmber 2014

Hello everyone!

I got accepted to the Humber 2nd entry program for September and I just wanted to connect with other future students before the term starts! Does anyone know when we'll be getting our schedules for the fall prep semester? How do we access our Humber email address? Is there a facebook group specifically for 2nd entry students?

hope to hear from someone soon!

@nataliej I got into Western, Trent and UNB/Humber. I think for me location played a huge part. I did not want to spend more money to live away from home. The UNB/Humber program looked pretty solid (although I heard and had some experiences that made me doubt their program after I accepted my offer). What about you? What made you choose Humber?

I chose Humber because of all the good things I heard about their program. I also like the fact that they give more clinical hours than usual. Location also played a part. It was either Humber or king city (Seneca/York). I was a little concerned before about it being a BN vs a B.S.C.N. degree, but I heard that they're the same.

I just got accepted last week, (was previously on the waitlist) so everything for me has been a little rushed.

hey guys! just wondering if anyone has received any updates about schedules yet? I had emailed last week but haven't gotten a response...

There's supposed to be a specific time & date to choose them in August.. Maybe try calling or emailing the coordinator.

I also emailed last week and have yet to hear back as well. So anxious to find out!

I will also be attending unb/humber second entry prep this fall. Any updates on registration/schedules?

Do you guys plan on attending the orientation?

hey @cc_humberunb!

no updates still from my end of things... I have a feeling we're just going to have to wait until they send it to us. Hopefully it'll be early early august!

I will be attending orientation, are you??

I will be attending. I'm not sure how important it is though. Just seems like a chance to meet and greet and get familiar with the campus.

Hey everyone, congrats on your acceptances! I graduated this year from UNB/Humber 2nd Entry program. Back when I started the program when it was the preparatory period consisting of having to take a combination or all of anatomy, pathophysiology I, statistics, microbiology, and psychology, the schedules were given out really close to the starting date or near end of August. And it is true, you do not have to select any courses, as it is done for you. There is only one section of each so no selection is required. What is different from the 4-year/Generic nursing stream is that you would not be picking any electives in the nursing program.

Heads up about what to expect as you begin the program:

1) In the prep semester, you will be in pathophysiology I, but in year 2, you will be taken pathophysiology II with the same professor. For the generic students, they take that course for a full year, you are entering the first term in the prep term, and will be in the second half later on. Point being is, get familiar with the professor and way of note-taking because they come in handy! If it is the same prof I had, you will really enjoy that class!

2) Get your documents ready before clinicals start in the January term (When the actual nursing program begins) such as Police reference check, CPR-level C for HCP, current immunizations, and we required ASIST back then as well. The police check takes the longest if you are from Toronto, you require a form from the school to apply.

3) Requiring to maintain a 74% grade in each course in the preparatory term is manageable! I know my friends and including myself were stressed over it because it determines if you move on but the work is manageable. What was most stressful was the self-inflicting pressure of making sure you were above that grade to ensure you were safe. Fortunately, I had to take all 5 courses and worked during school and passed with a great GPA, although that GPA will not be counted towards your overall GPA in nursing.

4) For us, psychology was done online and did not take too much out of my busy schedule so if you work, it can be done. I worked part-time and was able to get assignments done on time.

5) You can expect lots of uncertainty with the administrations at the college, they release schedules and dates not on a consistent basis. I realized we just had to go with the motion of the ocean and tackle things as they come. I know that it's frustrating to balance your life and work around school when they do not share any information early on.

6) At first, for the prep term and the first year after, you will be in a small group only comprising of the 2nd entry students, but afterwards, you merge with the generic and RPN-RN bridging students and will be in clinicals with them as well.

Good luck everyone! You will enjoy your time there, and there will be moments you will question your choice but I have no regrets :)

Feel free to ask me any other questions.

OH MY GOODNESS! Thank you so much @CaffienePOstat!!! I feel a lot better seeing the wealth of knowledge you just posted. WOW. Thank you thank you thank you!! I don't have any more questions right now because you just answered so many of them but I'm sure down there road I'll have some more!

THANKS AGAIN ?

No problem! I will try my best to help. I could go on with more information but I do not want to overwhelm people. I know it's really hard to start a program with few details but you will be informed of everything eventually, they will send you a booklist before school starts and your course schedule appears on SRS. Your syllabus will be found online when they start it up,... for us, it was called Blackboard but it could have changed since it wasn't even Blackboard when I started (things keep changing!). Most students print their lecture slides at the computer lab since each term you are given $25 credit to print at school. (One sweet thing there was the printers that could staple your sheets for you when printing).

But for now, enjoy your summer! The only thing I could see people doing in the mean time is preparing their finances (i.e. OSAP), taking the CPR course etc.

Hi CaffeinePOstat! Thanks so much for all of the info you've provided so far :)

I was just wondering if you had any night classes during your prep semester? I know this probably won't mean anything in regards to our schedule this fall, but I am trying to get some idea about what our schedule could possibly be like so I can let me work know, and any information helps!

Also, do you think the orientation day is worth going to?

Thanks!!

WOWWWW @ CaffeinePOstat ! Your response is what I have been searching for since I accepted my offer from UNB/Humber :) Thank you so much for giving us all of that information…It was very much needed. I find that there are minimal posts about UNB/Humber on AN and having your comments on this thread will help out many future UNB/Humber students. Keep it coming! You are awesome! Thanks again for putting in the time to write such a detailed response!
