Hello,
I am entering a nursing grad program in the fall and have questions about the HRSA app.
I took all my prereqs after graduating undergrad and got a 4.0 on those. What do I put as my cumulative GPA?
And for the scholarship, how much do they usually give out? The entire tuition an applicant requests? Or maybe just $1000 a semester? And even if you get a $1000, are you still required to work the same amt of time as those who get their full tuition covered?
Thanks!

Hi I am currently an HRSA Nursing Corps scholar and the simple answer to your question would be to sign up with the HRSA and then through your portal, send them a formal inquiry regarding your concerns. That's the only way to have your questions answered. You can also look up their contact phone number and call them, they are very helpful. I did that several times during the application process.
It's been a while since I applied, and since my BSN program began my brain has turned to mush, but I'd think that you would need to just factor in your individual pre-req grades into your overall GPA? Doesn't the institution that you took the pre-req's at have your transcripts from your previous bachelor's? If so, can't you just go to their records office and get an updated (compiled/completed) transcript with your total (summed) gpa on it?
Also, for the scholarship they pay for all tuition costs and certain other administrative fees, as well as they provide a 1,000 dollar a month stipend. You cannot choose to opt out of receiving this stipend in return for a shorter time commitment while working for them.
And just out of curiosity and not to sound rude, but I just wanted to ask, did you read any of the online info about the scholarship? I just ask because your post makes it seem like you're in the process of applying but then it seems like you're not sure what your getting yourself into. Forgive me if that's not the case, but it just freaks me out that someone would go forward with a process without putting in the effort to understand what they're doing or what the rules are.
Thank you for answering my questions.
I did read through the 40 page packet, but wanted to get further clarification on the points I was unclear about. I understand that this is a huge commitment and that is why I'm making sure I understand everything before applying.
And no, I cannot go to my pre-req and undergrad schools to ask them to compile all the GPAs as I took my prereqs at 4 different schools. I also don't live near the schools anymore, so I will do this myself.
I went to 3 different junior/community colleges for all my undergrad requirements and nursing pre req's, so I know how tough it can be to keep track of it all. If I recall correctly I think I just tallied up my total GPA myself. It was also made easier by having to plug in each individual class and grade into each school application. This helped me to figure out my totals really quickly. Good luck!

Hi everyone. I know that half of the scholarships are given out to those pursing nurse practitioner degrees but I was wondering if anyone who received it for undergrad could offer their experience. I am enrolling in Baldwin Wallace's accelerated nursing program and was wondering if it was even worth it to apply if I won't have high chances. I also wanted to know how people find out their EFC score. Mine should be 0-100 but I would like to know an accurate score. Thanks!
I received the Nurse Corps scholarship upon entering my first semester in my BSN program. I began the application process as soon as the cycle opened after I was accepted. The extracurricular experience I had included a year of volunteering on a Med Surg floor at a local hospital, and a year of interning as a public health researcher working in a low income community in Southern California. I also think my essays were reflective of my desire to serve in the critical shortage areas as I am from the Texas/Mexico border and grew up on both sides and among several different socioeconomic classes. I feel that I conveyed a sincere and genuine interest in underrepresented populations as well as a sensitivity to the challenges and realities faced by these communities.
If I were you I would ask myself, "Do I truly feel passionate about these issues and why?" as well as "What would I focus on in regards to these populations?, How would I apply my self in caring for members of these populations?"
In regards to the EFC score, this is provided to you by the Federal Government when you apply for financial aid. I believe it is expected that a person would not be applying for a scholarship if they are not or have not already applied for financial aid in some way/from some source. But the EFC is an actual number that is generated or calculated during the FAFSA process once you've applied for federal aid. Question: "Are you applying for federal school loans?" If not, why not? If not, why then are you applying for a scholarship? (Implied question: "What are your intentions in advancing your career? Are your motivations solely financial or status driven?"
Finally, I find your question about "wondering if it was even worth it" as being red flag in that I feel A) the benefits you potentially stand to gain far outweigh the minimal effort involved in applying, and B) a person who truly believes and understand this would inherently understand this, and C) If you cared about serving this population, you would apply and have things in your application to write about that substantiate your stated beliefs. Do you agree?
My apologies if you interpret this last paragraph in an exclusively negative way, it is intended to kind of "light a fire" under the ass of someone who from my experience is on the fence and needs a little push! :)
You can do, you stand nothing to lose and you owe it to yourself to try.
There is a web chat coming up where nurse corps scholars will be available to talk about their experiences going through the program and working in a critical shortage area. https://www.facebook.com/events/291205811003768/

Hi Everyone!
I, too, am pursuing the HRSA scholarship and was hoping to use this as a guide to see if anyone else has heard anything back?

I applied for the scholarship too for 2015. My application still says under review. For those who did get it about how long did it take for them to respond.
