HPSP for NP

Specialties Government

Published

Hi,

I am in the process of applying for the HPSP as a nurse practitioner through the AF. I graduate this May with my BSN and the NP program will begin two weeks later. I have a few questions.

What is the salary for someone who receives the HPSP and graduates as a NP with 0 experience? I know in the civilian sector jobs for NP's straight out of school range 75k and up. I am wondering if pay in the military will be comparable once all benefits have been factored.

Does anyone know what the current sign on bonus is for someone being accepted into this program?

If anyone can answer these questions for me I will be greatly appreciative. I have asked the recruiter but I think he wants to wait until I have been fully accepted before telling me about the pay.

Thanks,

Josh

I just accepted my HPSP through the Army for anesthesia school. In the military your pay is based on your rank and you would most likely be an O-1 because you have no experience. You can google a military pay chart to see what it would be per month. There are also other benefits not factored into pay such as free health and dental and no . You also can get a basic housing allowance if you live off base and that rate varies on where you are stationed.

You will not get a sign on bonus if you go the HPSP route, but you will get tuition, books, and a monthly stipend over $2k. Just be aware that your benefits won't start until you sworn in as an officer and the application process is long and time consuming so the sooner you start the better.

Thanks for the response!

Do you happen to know what's covered under the HPSP? I know books and tuition, but what about a computer? I am going to be in a distance learning program and my laptop's motherboard went out so I will need to buy a new one and I was just curious as to whether or not this would be covered.

Jmharrold- what are studying?

I don't think a computer is. I think they will pay for a computer rental, but don't quote me on that.

That stinks. I know they'll cover your books, but do you have to buy them first and then they reimburse you? Or how does that work?

Yes, you buy them and then you get reimbursed.

I thought anyone coming out of HPSP is an O3, or is that just for doctors and dentists? You will for sure be at least an O1 because of your BSN, but you may get a bump for having a higher degree. Your recruiter should be able to tell you.

Thanks for the information CK.

Rule of thumb we follow is:

BS Grad, O1

Masters Grad, O2,

Dr Grad, O3.

Of course previous experience sometimes plays into the "SCROLL" which is what we use to Get you a paygrade. There is a manual we use to come up with the paygrade.

Is there anyone on this board in the HPSP that will go to COT in 2015?
