HPSP Air Force Nurse-Midwife

Published

Hey All!

I just sent in the majority of my paperwork for the Health Professions Air Force Scholarship. My recruiter has been great about collecting the documents (and there were a lot of them). Apparently the board opens in October, so we're trying to get everything in by late September so my application will be near the top of the pile.

Anyone else applying for the October HPSP? Let's commiserate!

Also, would anyone happen to know how many spots are available in each specialty this upcoming year? He seemed to think that Nurse-Midwives would have an excellent chance, but I'm still nervous.

Thank you!

i am applying for the FNP. i was told board date is september 30th. I am nervous as well. He said 7 spots are available for mine with only 2 spots being one year scholarships which is what i need. I have been a nurse for 7 years. I have 3 years of ICU experience. I am a military spouse. and i have great recommendations. I have an interview tomorrow and thursday so hopefully they go well!!

Kgg6,

I don't know anything about the HPSP and AF, just wanted to say I am an army CNM. I'm very happy with my decision to be a military midwife. Good luck with your journey! :-)

I hope they went well! I have my second interview on Tuesday, so hopefully all good things all around!

That's wonderful to hear! I think it is always a wonderful indicator if someone likes their type of workplace, so I'm glad to hear you like the military midwife career. Thank you!

kgg6,

I'm applying for the AF HPSP program as a midwife as well. Actually started last October and was ready to submit this past August but was told all applications were on hold until after October 1st. Then when October came around I was told I had to apply to a DNP program versus the MSN program I was already accepted into. Where are you going to school? I've applied to class 134 at Frontier Nursing University and am waiting for my acceptance letter...hopefully!

I got accepted into the DNP Program at Frontier! My package for the AF HPSP is on its way up!

Congratulations on your acceptance, that's wonderful! So when you mentioned the new preference for a DNP-MSN Midwife, I was confused (since Midwives really haven't started moving in the DNP requirement direction yet) and I called my recruiter. He said that that the Air Force is hoping to get people in DNP-MSN programs for Midwives, but there are really only fours schools that offer that type of companion DNP program (like Frontier). So it sounds like you are going to have a HUGE advantage in the application process! Well done! I won't really be able to apply to any different school or anything at this point, and the DNP at my school takes an additional 2.5 years after the MSN... so not really an option at this point lol. Are you beyond excited for Frontier??

Thank you! I am cautiously optimist until I hear from the AF. I'm happy to have found someone going through the same process. Here's hoping at the end of January we will both be accepted and sharing stories about the program. Good luck

That would be wonderful! I'm really glad you mentioned their changed preference for DNP programs, I had no idea before. It is nice to talk to someone who is also applying for the Midwife slots. I'm sorry I can't respond to your PMs, I think I'm still too new on this website but when I am able I will definitely send you a message. Congratulations again on your acceptance to Frontier! I'll keep my fingers crossed for us, and hopefully we hear some good news in late January/early Feb!

So I meet with my recruiter and he said there are five CNM scholarships available this board....he didn't really say how may applicants. You have any insight from your recruiter?

I believe he said seven spots when I asked him, although that was a few months ago. I think five sounds right for CNM spots, and then I think there are seven for FNP. I'm not sure how many applicants there are although I have the feeling there are quite a few this year, from what he said about the applications and how some people are going into their second semester and still waiting to hear back from the selection board.

He did say my application was forwarded on to HQ! They don't do 'alternate' spots and things like that for HPSP, right? Do you happen to know, if there is a rejection, can we ask them to roll our application over to the next fiscal year without having to re-do the entire application?
