How's the job hunt going?

Hey everyone,

I know it's rough out there, but how is everyone's job hunt going? I passed boards and I've only been applying to jobs for about a week, but it's definitely a bit discouraging to see "New grads not being considered at this time." I'm trying to keep positive and apply to every position that is either accepting new grads or does not specify an experience requirement.

I'm new to the area so I don't have much ability to network, which I know is a big component to the job search. I have followed up on a few applications and left voicemails for some nurse recruiters, but I haven't received any return phone calls yet.

I guess I'm just looking to share stories with some others in my situation, since like I said, I'm new here and don't know anyone.

Hi Victoria - I've been looking since December (passed boards on 1/11) and I've gotten only 1 call back... it is pretty discouraging! I am not in the area yet, though so I hope things will be easier once I get there.

Swedish hospitals - she said there's like 200 applicants for each new grad position and each manager usually looks for something specific (ie the "Infant Unit Resident RN" position they are looking for ones who did their senior internship in the NICU), so try to make yourself stand out in any way you can. Maybe try to visit the hospitals too, that's what I plan on doing once I get there, whether it's to volunteer, to shadow, or just take a tour.

Oh, and Swedish said they've filled their "cohort" of med-surg residents that start in Feb. but will probably look to have another one that starts in July.

You might want to consider starting out at a SNF. You can get quite a bit of experience with IVs, PICCs, G-tubes, trachs etc. Especially if you work on a medicare unit. I first worked in LTC, then switched to acute care.

Yeah, I just started applying to a bunch of clinics today... and got a call back from a clinic and had an interview today! woo hoo!

Congratulations! I also have an interview in one hour!

I've definitely been looking outside of acute care... clinics, long-term care, etc. I had an interview today with a long-term care facility and i'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Retronovice - where was your interview? How did it go? I'm going back for my second interview today!

Interviewed at a SNF. It went well. Good lucvk with your 2nd interview.
