How is the Virginia job market for nurses?

Published

Fiancee' and I are working on completing our Associate degrees in nursing. We are coming from CT want to move somewhere close to family and cheaper cost of living. Fiancee' wants to continue to work in the nursing home. I am thinking of continuing to work in Psych or within a prison. Curious how the job market is for nursing with associate degrees in VA? Eventually will go for my BSN or MSN (Already hold a bachelors degree).

I have heard from a number of new graduates with an associates in Nursing that they have had trouble finding the type of job that they would prefer to have. Many settled for a nursing job that paid the bills but was not their hearts desire. This job hunt is a buyer's market if you have a BSN.

Come to Richmond and you'll have no problem at all :)

Appreciate the feedback. I'll have to get used to lower COL in VA, but like the lifestyle. Techs outside of the hospitals where I live make $10-$15 an hour. Inside a hospital $15-$22 an hour. LPNs make $20-$28 an hour.

Nurse's outside of the Hospital where I live make $25 to $30 an hour.

Nurse's in the hospital start around $28 to $32 an hour. They usually cap out at $50 am hour.

As a tech with my differential making $23 am hour.

Heard nurse's start in low $20s in VA. Would two married nurse's with 1 to 2 kids be able to make a decent living in VA?

Again appreciate the responses.

Curious anyone know how hiring is at VCU with them going for magnet status. I work at a magnet hospital. The policy is up to 2020 will accept associate nurses who can prove in an advanced nursing program. I know some magnet hospitals where I live only take BSN or higher nurses.

Just curious.

Thanks.

At VCU they will hire ADN on the promise that you'll obtain your BSN (on VCU). I think we maintain 70 or 80% BSN?

Our company hires ADN nurses all the time but you would be required to sign a BSN agreement to obtain it within 5 years of hire date.
