How did you support yourself & family while in nursing school?

Published

I am currently taking physiology, and will take anatomy in the summer and micro in the fall if all goes according to plan. My only worry is how im going to be able to support my family. Currently I make 48K per year at our local utility company but I work full time. i know once accepted to nursing school I will need to quit my full time job and possibly take a part time job (20-30 hours per week) while going to nursing school full time, and not to mention juggling my two kids & husband. I get so worried and discouraged that I cant do it. I was planning on getting into an ROP program at grossmont college (san diego) for possibly orthopedic tech, ekg tech, or some sort of other program where I can work at a hospital so they can be flexible with my hours but I know the pay will be half or less than half of what im making now. I currently have 12K in my 401k and hoping it will increase by 5-6K within 2.5 years which is when i plan to quit but i know that will not be enough to sustain our family. How much do people take our for student loans? I was planning on applying to all the community colleges in SD and SDSU & Cal State San Marcos ( although I doubt I will get in b/c it's so competitive). How did you all do it?
