How to have a specialty in Nursing

Specializes in Inpatient Obstetrics.

Ok so I don't know if this is a dumb question or not but how does a nurse become specialized in a certain field (ob/gyn, ICU, pulmonary)?

Specializes in ICU.

There may be classes you can take as electives in your nursing program, but mostly you get into a specialty by graduating and applying to work in that area. There are no specific nursing programs (that I know of, at least) that prepare you for only one specialty, with the exception of graduate degrees. We all graduate as generalists.

You get job experience, read journals and educate yourself, attend seminars/ grand rounds/ etc and THEN you take a certification exam. then you're a specialist!
