My class had skill checkoffs today. We arrived at school at 730 and made it through 3 checkoffs per student by the time class ended at 1200(there's 51 of us including 3 audits). There were 7 skills that we had to be prepared to demonstrate and when we went in the classroom we drew a skill from a cup then had to perform it. I had positioning(dorsal recumbent), sterile dressing change and deep breathing exercises. I was sooo nervous during checkoffs!! I was 'competent' on all 3 but if we never did a skills checkoff again, I wouldn't be heartbroken!! :wink2: The next checkoffs we do will include foley caths so that should be interesting...
How do checkoffs work at your school??
However, if you don't pass, the highest grade that you can get on the retest (and you get 3 tries) is a 50%!!!It's almost like there is no point in retesting if you're still going to fail lol. The skills check offs for health assessment are only worth 20% of our grade, but still...
Yikes!! We don't get an actual grade on ours, you're either competent or you're not. If you're not competent, you just have to re-try it on a makeup day.
Our next checkoffs will be sometime in November and will include inserting a Foley cath and getting a sterile specimen from a Foley cath. I actually can't wait for this checkoff, it seems more like 'official business' than the other stuff we checked off on. I know it's all important but this skill just seems more important.

We do 4 different skills check offs in my foundations class. the first one we had was on ROM and transfers/ambulation. everyone did ROM but each of us picked a card and we either had to do head, neck & shoulder; elbow, wrist & hand; or hip, knee & foot. then we either had to demonstrate a transfer from bed to chair or ambulation - we drew a card for this. i have another skills check this thursday - this time on vital signs! eek! i always get so nervous. i passed the first foundations one.
for my health assessment class, we have 3 different skills check offs. For the first one, everyone had to do a respiratory assessment, then we had to draw a card and either get skin (which was the hardest), head & neck (which was the easiest....and I got this one thank G*d lol
) and eye & ear. I passed this one, too!
