How to prioritize Nursing Dx

Published

Hi all, I've been a member for a few years, but a first time participant in asking a question in this forum. Help, I was criticized last week for not priortizing my nursing diagnosis. I know Maslow's Hierarchy and ABC's are important in the analyzation. The instructor blew away my confidence in a barkingly fashion. I need help with figuring out 5 nursing diagnosis for a premature 3 month old with hypothermia, sepsis, apnia, and respiratoy distress syndrom. What do you guys think?

Can't give you my help and opinion if you don't list the diagnoses.

One thing I did in school to prioritize my diagnoses was to ask the question: What will kill the patient first?

diagnosing is based upon the symptoms that the patient has. except for apnea, the hypothermia, sepsis, and respiratory distress syndrome are not symptoms but medical conditions that have signs and symptoms themselves. break them down into their symptoms and double check that the patient did have them. then look in a nursing diagnosis reference for nursing diagnoses that have those defining characteristics. prioritize by maslow's hierarchy of needs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/maslow's_hierarchy_of_needs)
