You need to work on getting your grades up. If you are having problems going to college and not working or volunteering you are going to have more problems if you do work or volunteer. You could see if there are tutors available for the science courses you will be taking, maybe there are student tutors(volunteers who are high in their class and do student teaching/tutoring on the side) there are many science courses on line that may help you. Where exactly are you having difficulty, with the actual classes or with the labs?? See if the instructors have any suggestions to help you.
