Hello, I need some advise and help quickly. I am a PCT on a very busy and disorganized Medsurg unit. Many of the nurses and techs are quitting for various reasons primarily understaffing issues and poor scheduling. I am fed-up as well and burnt out but I like the hospital and I have had the opportunity to float to different departments which I have enjoyed. My question is: How can I tactfully and politely ask to transfer to another department without making my department director upset? I have already told her that I am interested in a transfer but she hasn't done anything about it. I have an appointment with HR about some other issues and I'm thinking of bringing it up at that time. I don't want to quit I just want to leave Medsurg. Any advise or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You would likely have to apply for a position as an internal candidate. You would then go through the same courser as all applicants, including an interview. Depending on your facility's policies, you may be eligible to transfer pending approval from your manager.
My facility's policy is that 6 months minimum are required on a unit before being eligible for transfer, and the first unit has the ability to delay the transfer for 12 weeks in order to fill the vacancy.

I told my boss I wanted to transfer units because the application asks if your current boss is aware you want transfer, I still haven't got a reply from any unit I applied to, makes me wonder if my boss isn't approving it if she's been contacted just so I have to stay where I'm at.
