How do you parents do it?

Published

This is probably a silly question. I am a newly licensed RN - still looking for employment. I have a 5 year old who will be entering Kindergarten in Sept 2014. Besides help from family members, how are you able to get your kids to and from school on a 7-7 schedule?

My husband and I are in the process of looking for a home and we do not have family members that are able to help get our daughter to school/school bus. Am I missing something? Hubby also has an early work shift (6am-2:30) and we are just sitting here scratching our heads wondering how we are going to work this schedule when I do eventually land a job.

Any insight is appreciated! I'm in the suburbs close to Phila PA.

Thanks,

Kelly

I am one who couldn't hack it. My DH works nights and that was the shift I got. Made it a year having sitters stay late or overnight then left the hospital and got a clinic job working M-F 8:30-4:30. I know many make it work but we could never achieve the right balance for our family with me doing 12h days.

We had a care dot com sitter who came in the mornings when the kids were little. We are in a similar situation, both parents on shift work, sometimes opposite shifts with little kids and no family in the area. It's hard, but workable. I am sure the sitters aren't all as awesome as ours, but there must be other good ones out there! Good luck :)

My solution was that I opted to turn down the 12 hour positions and took the more family-friendly 8s. I did 7-15 on the weekdays, 15-23 on the weekends. I drop the kids off and most of the time, I pick them up. On the weekend, the better half handles it all.
