How nursing in college works

Published

Hi! Im a high school senior and have made up my mind that i want to be a nurse. Im thinking of starting at a community college and after getting my ADN go for my bachelors. For the school that im looking at (chaffey college) there is a list on the nursing adn page of general ed classes that i would have to take and then a list with nursing classes. The first list has like 30 units, and the second one about 41. So a total of around 71 units. I was wondering if my first year in college i would be taking those 30 credit general ed courses and then the second year would be the 41 unit nursing courses and that would take two years total if of course i take it all when im supposed to take it. Im really confused with how it works, like is it basically one year of general ed and one year of actual nursing classes? I asked the admin lady and she had no clue..

You generally take gen eds before admitted to nursing program, then your nursing classes take 2 years

A counselor helped me create a plan that will hopefully allow me to get my adn by 2019.

I'm currently in my 2nd semester in chaffey and plan on taking 4 classes a semester and maybe 1 or 2 classes during the summers. This just for the prequisites. In total, my pre reqs should take me around 2 years and after that, the nursing program will take an additional 2 years.

This is all according to the plan my counselor laid out for me.
