How Much Should a Collaborating Physician Be Paid?

Thanks for the article, Karen. I'm not in a position where I would practice independently and hire a physician to meet collaboration requirements. It seems like the "summary" is that whatever the hourly market rate for a physician in the same specialty multiplied by the actual number of hours spent on collaborative activities (phone calls, chart review, etc.) is the rule. I think this is a great moonlighting gig for physicians.

I am in a state where collaborators are only needed for experienced NPs for the purpose of billing insurance. The fees that NPs are paying here are many times the hourly rate involved in actual collaboration. You are essentially not paying for the time, which might be minimal, you are paying for the risk.
