How much money should I save?

Published

Hi everyone,

I am a American nursing student and I want to work in london after I graduate. I wanted to save about $60,000-$70,000 before I moved there. This would be in addition to my salary in the UK. Will this be enough money? I have looked into apartments or flats and they tend to run aroud $1500-$2000/month. Should I get a roomate or can I live alone? thanks for any advice

Hi Jen,

If you get employed by the big hospitals they have hospital accomodation and it is relatively cheap. It is a good opportunity to meet other co-workers and be very close to hospital so no travelling expences. You can then take your time in choosing where you would like to live in London.

The money mentioned is a large amount for you to have good time on.

Hiya,

Wow, you really are thinking of a lot of money! All you have to factor in is that you won't get paid for a month (arrear pay) and you'll have to pay one months rent in advance and one month deposit. I live alone in London in a nice flat and pay £600 a month, not including bills, I guess that's about $1300. If you share, you are looking at around £350, often inclusive of all bills.

I adore living alone to be honest, with night shifts and the like, its so much easier not to have someone having to tip-toe around you ;)

Best of luck getting here :)

Thanks for the all the advice.
