How much math is involved in nursing school?

Published

I am curious about how much math is involved in nursing school? Is it a little or a lot? And what classes do you typically have that incorporate medical math?? what is the general level of difficulty?

Yes, the math is doable. Out of 30 students, only 1 couldn't get the math test on the 3rd try.

We had a question on a test that went something like this: The dosage was 1000mg and the vial contained 1g. How many doses are in the vial? Half the class put 5 doses. I have no idea how they came up with that.

Yesterday on the final, a classmate was asking me about the same kind of problem, meaning it had 1000mg and 1g and she was going on and on about how confused she was. I really just wanted to tell her that I just cannot see how she doesn't know that 1000mg = 1g by now....?

Yep, that happened with us as well. It was something like infuse 1000 mL of saline. You have a 1 L bag of saline. How many bags will you give....or something along those lines.

I guess this should be the answer to the "Is Nursing School HARDER than Medical School" thread, LOL. :lol2:

Seriously, if someone can't get that concept inside of about 15 minutes, they should be given the boot.

Amazing to me how low are the standards for some nursing school admissions criteria.

For real... somebody actually posted that? Please tell me that nobody is actually advocating such nonsense.

Yep, it's a long thread. Go into my history or under the general student forum, and you'll find it. It's around 15 pages.

I've bought a few math calculation books that are used in nursing schools and I don't find any of the math hard. I recently just memorized all the metric conversions. It's just that I hear that the tests are timed and I get nervous a bit

General advice for the OP:

1) Learn all the rules of fractions (i.e. multiplying by the inverse is same as dividing) and percentages.

2) Learn some of the basic pre-Algebra "properties of numbers" (to allow you to do things like isolate a variable).

3) Learn the metric and household/english units for weight, distance and volume.
