How much do males nurses make in NYC?

Published

Hi everyone, I was just wondering if anyone here knew how much a male RN makes and how long you'd have to go to school for it. Is it just two years? Do you have to get your B.A? And how long does it take it make 6 figures? thanks again!

Hi everyone, I was just wondering if anyone here knew how much a male RN makes

The same as a female RN, and it depends on the facility, and location. Downstate RNs make more than upstate. All new grads start at a base salary of $69k where I work, and you add in more for working nights, any experience, higher degrees, and certifications. It also depends on the contract your hospital has with NYSNA, the state nurses union.

how long you'd have to go to school for it?

2+ years for your associate's degree, depending on waitlists and prerequisite requirements. Check out local school requirements. 4-years for your Bachelor's degree, which opens up opportunities for management and education positions.

Do you have to get your B.A?

No.

And how long does it take it make 6 figures?

Depends. With OT, a NYC RN can easily hit 100k. But remember, with that kind of income, you enter another tax bracket. You will need to find a balance where you can live comfortably, and enjoy some time off. If all you want to do is pull $100k, you'll find yourself with a sucky social life.

Do nursing for the job satisfaction, and because you want to, not for the money. With the job security and good $$ comes a lot of stress.

Good Luck!

Thanks steve, but I've heard from one of my friends who is a physician at columbia say that male nurses are higher because most of the males in the hospitals who are men are doctors and don't want the grunt work. Is this true? And I think you mentioned in one of your previous posts that work in nyc easily starts at 80? I'd be lying if I said im not going into it for just the money but I want something more financially secure as opposed to teaching. I'm also an adrenaline junkie =)

Nvm, thats LPN. hahah but thanks!

No, it's not true what your friend said. When you are hired, you are a union employee with a contract. You get the same as any nurse with your qualifications would. I don't know what he means by grunt work. A male nurse works as a nurse. A female nurse works as a nurse. Granted men in nursing are a minority, but we all had the choice to go to medical school or nursing school.

Salaries depend on location, and your union contract. Most new nurses work night shifts, which automatically boosts your income by $5,000-6,000. With some certifications, experience and a BSN, comes even more money at my facility. Keep in mind that as a nurse you will have to work your share of weekends, nights, and holidays. No more summers off. You'll get vacation dates based on seniority.
