How much CNA orientation to ask for?

Published

Hi Everyone,

I'm starting my first CNA job in an upscale facility that I think is going to be an excellent place for me. I'm a prenursing student and the experience is required for a school I want.

My question is, how much orientation should I ask for? It looks like I can have all I want. In fact, my first day is all classroom...that's so encouraging.

Also, does orientation mean I'm one-on-one with another CNA all day long? That's what I want, vs.being expected to fend for myself and go hunt someone down to ask questions.

So my two questions are, how many days would you estimate to be adequate, and am I right to assume orientation means one-on-one with another CNA? Thank you in advance! Tofutti

Congrats on your new job! It's hard work but it's good experience. My experience is orientation varies upon facilities and their need for you on the floor. Most orientation's I've had have been focused towards the facility such as layout, procedures/policies. You just need to remember to speak up if you need assistance or have questions. Remember: protect your back, lots of lifting as a CNA. Good LUCK!

you are going to follow an aide for a few days, but beware, don't just stand there and watch-help out and anticipate what you are going to do next. you'll get an idea of the routine, but that doesn't mean you will get to know all the residents. and when you are on your own, you'll feel lost because everyone around you already has their routine. and you will probably feel weak physically because working as an aide really builds up alot of strength.:pumpiron:

generally places have an info sheet on each resident, but for me going into a new place i figure i know how to be an aide, i know how to forsee peoples needs and all i really need to know about each person is

1. are they 'with it'? (cognitive level)

2. are they mobile? (how well do they transfer)

3. are they continent? (do i need to be checking their briefs?)

good luck!! you'll be glad you got this experience :clown:
