How Many of us have "Considered" a different profession and why?

I am interested in how many of us have considered changing professions and why?

For myself I have thought about going back to school to get a computer science degree for many different reasons...

The biggest reason is chronic back pain from 3 fractured vertebra after being hit by a drunk driver. Haven't had to quit yet but we'll see...

I love caring for my patients but I think everything has a reason for happening and when one door closes another opens.

I did go back for my Master's, and I'm now a FNP. I love what I do, but I don't always love my *job* (the circumstances in which I do it. I wouldn't want to stop completely, but I'd love to work as an NP part-time, and in the rest run an antique/collectibles/bookstore. I love to poke around in thrift shops, yard sales and so forth, and "treasure hunt." It's completely different from nursing so it gives me a mental break. I think doing both would give me a great "balance." I've also considered going back for some mental health/counseling training; there is a lot more "psych" in primary care than I ever expected.

Of course if someone died and left me lots of money I wouldn't turn it down!!

I have a lot of health problems. I'm trying to plan for the future and get more educated so that I won't have to do the physical nursing if the time comes that I find that too hard. I'd mayby like to be a clinical nurse specialist.

I've always wondered what I'd have ended up if I wasn't a nurse. Maybe an architect, designer, singer..... I'm sure I'd be a very good office manager (like to hyperorganize), but would they be as rewarding as nursing? Hard to say.

I can't imagine not being a nurse. I truly enjoy being a nurse, BUT, I get bored easily. I have been a nurse for 7 years and in that time I have done LTC, subacute care, Med Surg, Telemetry, Pysch. LTC, Skilled visits, Pedi. Private Duty, and did a stint in a methadone clinic. I currently work in Primary Care where there is no such thing as mandated overtime, working weekends and holidays, or being frozen in. I love the hours, but frankly, I'm an overpaid medical assistant. My next step is to get my bachelors so I can do case management or take on a Nurse Manager Position.
