I am applying to two nursing schools in CO (metro and Regis univ. both accelerated) For Metro I was an alternate but was not rotated in. I find out about Regis in august. My question is this: How many times should I apply to each before assuming its just not in the cards? My game plan if I don't get into Regis this august is to take a phlebotomy course without waiting to hear from Metro in November. When I make the money back I will reapply to Regis (need to be able to afford those philosophy courses.). I am 26 years old and have a ton of volunteer experience but only a recent history of good grades (really good, used to be really bad). It really means a lot to me and I feel my volunteer experience substantiates that.

I would recommend contacting Metro, and ask them how you could improve your dossier for a new application in 2011. If Regis does not come through, do the same with them.
Seek the opinion of the people who reviewed your file (or have notes from the admissions committee). Then decide if you want to follow the Regis/Metro advice.
I am the Assistant Dean for Admissions at another university, and we receive many more applications than we have spaces. Many people who were denied admissions contact me for advice on re-applications. Our admissions committee welcomes reapplications ---- especially from those who follow our advice on ways to strengthen the new application.

I only have one tip to add to UVAgrad's excellent advice. The University of Northern Colorado BSN programs counts the grades from your last 45 credit hours only, and gives double weight to prerequisites. This can be a good choice for students who have only recently improved their GPAs.
However, it's north of the metro Denver area, and its prerequisites are somewhat different from all the other programs. That means if you pursue UNC, you'll take courses that you wouldn't need to take as prerequisites for Metro or Regis.
Good luck from another Colorado student,
Dina
