How Many Semesters is your School?

Nursing Students General Students

Hi All,

I'm attending a 5 Semester RN Program at a Community College. After a 1 week break, we started 3rd Semester this week, will go straight through the Summer and begin the 4th Semester in August.

I recently met a nursing student from another local C.C. that only has 4 semesters - they have the entire Summer off and don't go back until August. We sort of compared where we were in our Programs and as far we could tell, we had both had the same classes these past 2 semesters.

I'm actually glad we'll be going straight through the Summer - because even after the 1 week break, you start to lose focus and it takes a couple of days to get back into the swing of things. I can't even imagine having the entire Summer off and being expected to have retained all of that info. As one of my Instructors said - We just keep building upon your knowlege and moving "ya'll" along at a steady pace towards that goal of "RN"...

We just finished Med/Surg and most of the Summer will be spent in L&D. I believe next Semester will be a much more in depth Med/Surg and Complicated L&D (building on the basics we learn over the Summer). Just curious why there is a difference in the amount of Semesters at some schools...

My ADN program is 5 semesters, including one summer. The last semester is really only half, though. It's only one class that lasts 8 weeks.

Our program is 5 semesters as well. But I haven't started yet, I'm going to try and enjoy the summer as much as possible. August will be before we know it. Also in NC, as far west as you can get before you hit TN.

I'm a 5-semester-er too. :)

(I go to school in NC as well)

Glad to be getting it all done quickly.

My summer program is all weird. I'm taking 3 classes, and they just don't line up! Maternity is 7 weeks long (started 2 weeks ago), Physiology is 9 weeks long (started last week), and Abnormal Psych is 15 weeks long (also started last week). I still haven't figured that one out yet!

Cheers to whoever created that schedule! :uhoh3:

hiya, jus thought i'd tell about the british courses,we do 3 years which consists of a total of 9 modules. 3 modules (semesters) per year, each 15 week blocks, broken down into 50% theory and 50% clinical practice. This means that throughout the whole of the year we only get 7 weeks holiday.

which would you prefer yours or ours?

Dawn. xx

Specializes in ICU, psych, corrections.

4 semesters with break from June until August. I utilized that time well...I worked as an Apprentice Nurse full time (three 12-hour shifts each week) and learned SO MUCH. It helped me tremendously through my 2nd year of nursing school...without it, I would have struggled a lot more than I did and wouldn't have had the confidence I did. I enjoyed my time away from school and needed the break. Plus, I've got small kids and they needed me for part of that time...teehee!

It paid off....I was pinned yesterday afternoon and walked across the stage with my hubbie last night (we both received degrees). Wonderful, crazy, exhausting day....but worth every minute!!!!

Specializes in Emergency & Trauma/Adult ICU.

Our diploma program is 5 15-week semesters plus a 6-week nursing leadership/trends course at the end. This last 6 weeks (17 days to go ... !) includes a clinical preceptorship and NCLEX prep.

Almost there .... :D

I'm in an Associate's program at a CC and its four semesters for the core nursing program with the summer off. You can take sciences and electives and stuff in the summers but nursing is only offered fall and spring. I kind of wish we had a summer semester; I worry about forgetting too much over the next couple months!
