I'm back!
I'm wondering how common it is for NPs to work in hospitals. Does it depend upon region or specialty? Do you find many of them in cardiology or oncology? And what sort of degree do they have?
Thanks.

Not an NP yet, but we have NPs working in our hospitals on all the various floors. They are hospitalists hired by the hospital. Of course, we also have NPs who are working for specialty groups/ private practices who do rounds daily here. This is region dependent and just varies greatly wherever you go.

I am a nurse practitioner employed by a hospital. While it is difficult to find actual figures and percentages of NP's who exclusively work in hospital settings in different regions of the country, we do exist. There is a variety of departments that employ NP's from Hospitalist Medicine to specialty practices such as Cardiology, Critical Care, Nephrology, etc. The 2007 Salary Survey published by Advance for Nurse Practitioners lists hospital NP's fourth in rank in terms of salary (http://nurse-practitioners.advanceweb.com/Editorial/Content/Editorial.aspx?CC=105177&CP=2).

Its about 15% but thats probably low. I'm guessing the 24% other has at least some inpatient work.

Here in middle GA there are groups using NP's in the hospital as well some of the hospitals using them in house.
I work for a hospital outside of the hospital.
I know the VA uses them.
I don't know the actual numbers though.
Problem is some groups use RN's in APRN duties. This might be a limiting factor for APRNs use in hospitals or might not.
