How Many New Cna"s Are Older?

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Published

Since I'm 32, I wonder, will I be the oldest in my training class? Makes me wish I had figured out my career path when I was younger, before having kids. The instructor told me, "honey, if you haven't cut the umbilical cord from your kids, you;re going to have a hard time here"!

At 19, I'm the youngest in my class. My five classmates are in their early-20s to mid-60s.

I've yet to notice age as a factor in doing the work to the best ability possible or passing the course; the woman in her 60s is one of the best students in our class. I think it all comes down to how seriously you take the course (a BIG problem with a few of the younger students).

Thanks everybody for responding! I decided not to take that course at the nursing home after all. I've decided to just pay for the course at the college I've been at for a couple years. The nursing home was requiring that I work full time after training and I'm just not ready to put my kids in day care so much, especially since I'd only be making a little less then 8 dollars an hour. Once I have my liscence, I'll find a job with more flexability.

in response to your message:

thanks kim for your comments as hubby has finished the cna component and starts next month with the nursing program. he is trying to get some hands on experience at the moment. i shall pass your comments onto him as i am sure he will be interested to know that the experience for you was a good one.

i see that more states are requiring that you do not have to do the cna component. have you heard of this? actually, where i live, more nursing programs are requiring

cna training the summer before the nursing program starts.

i feel it is a good thing to do for the 'basics' in good patient care alone. it is your grounding to what lays ahead of you.

how is the bsn going for you? so far, so good! thanks.

hubby has already lined up to do his bsn after his 2 yr np. i wish your husband well also. reading your description - looks like you have enough experience for all of us! ;)

i wish you well in your career.

I am 30 years old. I LOVE my job as a CNA. I am starting nursing school for my LPN this fall, but let me tell you, I work with CNA's in ALL different age groups and I have to tell you, though some (actually MOST) of the young CNA's are truly good at their jobs, there are two cna's who come to mind with this question. One is in her early 50's and another is in her mid 60's and both are darn good aides. I'll tell you, I'd work with either of the two of them before some of the younger ones. First of all, maturity and secondly experience. I find in this line of work, there's ALWAYS room to learn something new. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean to put down the younger cna's. As long as they're not in the profession for the wrong reasons. Some young girls start cna work thinking they'll get rich. I'm still wondering who lied to them. But, bottom line is, whether you're young or old, as long as you're here for all the right reasons, you'll be just fine!! And I agree with the person who said, do well in your class and show your instructor up! Give yourself a pat on the back and plunge in! Good luck!

When I was taking my CNA classes I was 28 and thought I would be the oldest. I was so shocked to see the difference in ages 18-60's, and people from all walks of life. I wouldnt sweat the age thing most people dont figure out their true calling at 18 when the get out of high school it takes most of us years before we know.

I am 42, but I wasn't the oldest in my class. She was 62 :smiletea2:

Thank you Sabby NC!! How is your husband doing?

Good morning to you.

Hubby had a very long tiring day yesterday but enjoyed it non the less. He has got all his classes sorted out with folders to match. He is studying well already. I know he is going to do well in his Nursing Program. He has also been accepted to do the bridge program at WSSU for the RN-BSN.

Yes I am a seasoned nurse of 30 years and love my job very much. I am in Hospice Nursing and will stay in this field until I decide I need to retire LOL.
