I have a friend who is graduating in May and she said that she is finding that the people who did externships (or worked as PCT's more or less) for the various local hospitals are getting the call backs faster. I'm in my second of 4.5 semesters and debating on weather or not I should go ahead and take a job. I'd love to hear what you guys think. Thanks!!
Hiya! I just got accepted in to an extern program and one of the contigincies is that you work for them after.. its a type of recruitment service for the hospital. They have the added benefit of paying your tuition as well. I know alot of programs in my area do that. I am in the NYC area. But I absolutely can not wait to do the extern program. Its paid as well!
I'm doing a paid extern program over the summer too. I have to work at least one shift a month once school starts in the fall and work one year for them afterwards. I felt like its worth it since I don't have any substantial medical experience and clinicals at school just aint enough. I want to be ready once I start my last semester in the fall.
Plus the experience that you receive, you cannot put a price on it.
I was in a Diploma program, and also worked as what we called a nurse tech back then and it was the best experience ever. Never, ever would have thought not to do it. It only increased my skills much quicker than someone starting out with me.
Couldn't agree with you more!
Any experience that you get is going to help you. I just got hired into an ICU. I got hired a month ago, pending me passing my boards (graduate in May). The manager told me that I was the only new grad hired into this ICU and they chose me because I had years of experience as a tech. You won't have trouble finding a job as a new grad-but you'll get a better one with some experience under your belt!
I worked as tech my entire 4 years of school. The experience I gained is priceless. My first year of school, when I was doing my basics, I was an E.R. Tech. We moved to a different city about 2 hours away and I immediately got a job as a phlebotomist in a rehab. hospital. We had a lot of ortho patients. I did that for a little over a year. Then, I got a job working in the largest/busiest NICU in the United States. This hospital deliveries more babies than any other hospital except for one in India! I worked as an extern last summer at a Children's hospital, also Level I in the CVICU. And my last year of school, I stayed on in this unit as a tech. The other techs are all paramedics or emt's so we are able to do a lot! I am going to be working starting in June at a major university medical center in the CCU! I am so excited.
The experience I have is great but what also helps is my extra activities. I was President of our nursing association and this was great experience for me as well!
Best of Luck!
Avery
