I was just wondering in each of the hospitals you all work at approximately how many deliveries a day there are and if days ever go by where therre are none.

We have something like 500 deliveries a year, so some times we go several days without any new babies and then of course we have other days when we have 4-5. Either feast or famine. You know how that goes.

Same with us. We usually have at least 100 deliveries/month. I just work weekends. This last weekend (7 pm-7am), we had 6 deliveries. The weekend before, none, just PP patients.
Obviously, all the scheduled CS, and the inductions are delivered during the week.

WOW! 500 per year?? I thought I read that wrong. We do around 500 per MONTH! Never ever has there been in the history of our unit a day with no babies. Not even a shift! We average 8-10 per shift, with twice that per 24 hrs. Also, we do anywhere from 1-4 C-sections every shift. Matter of fact, we had 6 vag deliveries last night and 3 C-sections. Other night, we had no C-sections on night shift (very rare!) and 11 vag deliveries. SG

Well that is what happens when you work in small hospital!! There are many many hospitals that deliver far less than that.

I worked Thursday, 7p-7a, no deliveries those 12 hrs and only 2 during the day shift. First time in months that has happened. We do about 130 del/mon. Of course, this Aug, Sept and Oct will be much busier...always is. Even with a mild winter!

Just yesterday from 7a-7p we did 8 c-sections, and atleast 5 vag deliveries. And from 7p-7a we did 5 vag deliveries, and 1 c/s. So ... thats 19 yesterday atleast. It was hell night. All this with 4 nurses!

That is so true. I just looked at our delivery record for May - 7 babies. There have been 8 so far this June with 4 in the last 6 days - one planned cesarean and 3 vag deliveries. There will be weeks w/o a delivery.
Rural nursing - gotta love it.

Nothing at all against that, because God knows I love a slow night whenever I can get one, but do you get bored? Or do you do PP or nursery or something if you have no L&D patients?
I work acute (med/surg), post-partum, L&D, and also the ER. I sometimes am the baby nurse in cesareans. On our acute floor we will have post-partum mom/babe, post-op total knees or hips, COPD/pneumonia, Hospice patients, pediatric patients, infants with jaundice or RSV, post-op hernia repairs or cholecystectomy patients, occasionally a hysterectomy patient, etc.
We don't have a designated L&D nurse . . . we just do it all.
Today I am the nursing supervisor and ER nurse - we combine those two roles here. One nurse in the ER with two EMT's and one doc. There are three ER beds. Not every nurse who works here does OB or ER. Most of us do but there are some who just don't want to do that.
In order to work in the ER we have to have our MICN so we can give orders over the radio to the medics.
All the nurses get ACLS and most get PALS.

The hosptial where I work averages about 350 deliveries per year, give or take. There may be a few days with no deliveries and occasionally a "boom" with 4 or 5 in one day. Doesn't sound like much, but in these small hosptals, the nurses do all areas...no NICU, no newborn nursery or postpartum split. Also, light housekeeping and plenty of clerical...yuck. So, just as busy overall.
Yeah we don't have nurses who only do labor. We all do labor, special care nursery, well nursery, postpartum and gyn surgical. And if we float to all other areas of the hospital if needed. Now that is what really sucks!
