I am graduating in May with my RN and have been selected for a program that will place me in the ED after being oriented. How long should that orientation be? Thank you for the feedback.

Mine was 13 weeks in the PICU as a new grad. It seemed like enough. Though I had a very supportive nursing staff who were extremely helpful when I came off orientation. There was always someone willing to answer questions, give an opinion, or help with a task.

I had twelve weeks for ER. Interspersed with a bunch of classes. The thing with a good ER, or any good unit, is that you are never alone.

If you need twelve months you need a different career.

A lot depends on the particular ED -- how much support they have available on the average shift after orientation, for example.

I feel my situation will be similar to yours. I was able to precept down in the ED so I am familiar with the team and everyone is super supportive and great at helping out.

You had one week of training? I highly doubt this.
