I have been an RN for 18 months. Did med-surg for a year and now do L&D. Would HIGHLY recommend everyone doing med surg first. I would be lost as far as time management and critical thinking if I had gne straight into L&D. Pay is the same for most nursing positions-not much variety between departments. I have the best job in the world, but when it's bad-it's really bad. You have to have nerves of steel, patience of a saint-be a great educator-be tolerant and most importantly think the birth process is a miracle!

Specializes in labor & delivery.

I love the patient care; hate the charting as I feel I nurse a computer not the mom. It is very busy and things can change quickly. Pay is the same as any staff nurse in my facility.
