How intensive is surgical tech?

Published

I'm looking forward to starting my surgical tech program which will be a year long, 3 semesters; Fall, Spring and summer (2018-19). I also would like to prepare for nursing school in the future and CNA is a requirement for my ADN program and would like to include a fast track 6-week CNA weekend course during Fall semester. Is that ill-advised?

-Fall semester we have lecture and labs, meet 3 days a week

-Spring semester we do clinicals and and meet Fridays for lecture, meet 5 days a week

-Summer semester, we do clinicals and meet 4 days a week

Can you give me insight on what I should expect during these semesters so I have a better judgement whether I should include the CNA program in conjunction with the ST? I can always do the CNA later, but that means I have to apply to nursing later as well. I presume it's more manageable if I do the CNA during Fall, as the ST only meets 3 days week. Or is it better if I focus 100% on ST and leave out CNA for later?

Why am I doing this? ADN was my first choice, but ST picked me up first, I can't turn down this opportunity (if I don't get into nursing)

Since this is a board primarily made up of nurses and nursing students, you may not find the insight you're looking for here. Association of Surgical Technologists may provide some resources for you, as well as perhaps some facebook groups that are geared towards surgical technologists and surgical technologist students.
