How am I doing? What should I do?

Published

Here is my current situation.. I am a sophomore at University of Houston and my cumulative GPA after this past fall '06 semester is 2.77, a reduction from my previous GPA of 2.85. My one and a half semesters are as follows:

Fall 2005 (Hours: 13, GPA: 3.07)

English Comp I: B-

Intro to Psych: A

Physical Geology: C-

College Algebra: A-

Freshmen Core Class: A

Spring 2006 (Hours: 15, GPA: 2.66)

Art History I: A

History II: B-

Govt II: C-

Pre-Cal: C

English Comp II: B

Summer 2006 *Community College (Hours: 6, GPA: (does not configure into University's GPA))

History I: A

Govt I: B

Fall 2006 (Hours: 10, GPA: 2.36)

Foundations of Chemistry: D+

Foundations of Chemistry Lab: A-

Intro to Statistics: B

Intro to Sociology: C+

Cumulative GPA's: 2.77 .

I don't understand myself anymore. In high school, I would have never settled for a C or anything below a B+ even, but somehow during these semesters, it unfortunately got to the point where I was glad I got a C cause atleast I passed. Mind that I did have personal problems at the point where I started to show lack of good academics during the 2006 courses. That D+ is the first D I've ever had in my life.. It's kind of a reality slap to me.. I've had a lot of conflicts during the semester, just like anyone else, finding your real friends, finding the right motivation and influence. I just let myself go, and I can't do that.. Next semester has a very different change, I am taking 17 hours for the Spring 2007 semester.

I hope I'm doing the right thing, I want to get myself back on track and completely focus all my time in school. I know that wanting and actually doing it are very different things, but I know I can do it. I had the discipline from elementary school to my graduation of high school, so I know I can. I'm hoping to apply during the spring for the fall ADN program that I hope to get in.

I have an SAT score of 960.. so I doubt that would increase my chances of getting into the program, so I have to take the ACT which will be in February.. So much on my plate..

How do ya'll think I'm doing..? :(

I would also like to note I did not put all my grades, GPA, etc., to show off, I wanted to post for honest opinions. Please let me know, thank you -

**Edit: Also, I'm sorry I didn't put it in my first post, but the University of Houston does not offer a nursing program. Instead I am trying to get into an RN program at my community college, which has a admission criteria of a good SAT or ACT score, and with the pre-reqs of A&P I and II, Microbiology, College Algebra, and English Comp I & II. The other classes I'm taking like HDFS and Philosophy are pre-reqs for the BSN program of UT of Houston..

Hello! Fellow Houstonian here! Don't get discouraged yet! First off we're in Houston and there are several BSN and community college programs in the area and even some in Galveston and surrounding areas. Most programs only configure into the GPA what they require for the program and science GPA usually weighs pretty heavily. Also I think alot of people start off with a not so stellar record in college. I wish I could make my first year transcripts disappear! My very first semester in college landed me with a C, D, F and W...after I had just graduated top of my class in high school. I had some unexpected health problems which landed me several hospital stays and subsequently missed half the semester. But of course the colleges don't see that on the transcripts. So what can you do?! But if they look at everything I've done recently nothing under a B. I've also made the dean's list the last couple of semesters, but still could only get my GPA up to a 3.46. I have applied to UT-Houston and am currently awaiting my fate. I'm not very confident either, but all you can do is apply! You will never know if you don't apply. I just recently took 17 credit hours this past semester and it was killer, but I ended up with 4 A's and a B! That was along with working full time and a part time job! So see anything is possible if you set your mind too it. It's not easy, not at all. There will be times when you want to give up or go through a nervous breakdown! Hey I made D's on my first two chemistry tests and cried afterwards, but I refused to give up and worked harder and got a B in the class. If you truly think you can do it, go for it! Only you know what you are capable of. You will have to abandon any sort of life for the next few months and do nothing but study, but it can be done. Never give up. Never lose faith. Keep your eyes on the end goal! Good luck!

All I can say is.. WOW. I'm sorry to hear about your illness. I'm glad someone has actually attempted what I strive for. Once again. WOW. Thank you for telling me your experience, because it makes me feel better that I'm not the only one having a bad beginning, no offense :p. Yeah that is a trait of me, wanting to give up and actually just doing it. But next semester I really want things to change, I had been skipping a lot of classes and spending studying time in recreational activities. Your experience I will use as an inspiration, because it has motivated me to know I can make things better. THANK YOU!

Well, during my first few years of college, I didn't do too well either. I was all about partying and not about the books. I got C's in College Alg, Chemistry and Micro, only because I just wasn't focused on school....now it's coming back to haunt me, because those are my pre-req's for nursing school. I did eventually get my BS in Bio.....but I only wish I knew then what I know now. I've been out of school for 5 years and am now deciding nursing is for me. It's great that you know that you want to become an RN...I suggest you don't take too many science courses at once. That's what got me in trouble. Just stay focused and work hard.....it will certainly pay off in the end.

Good luck to you!!

YOU CAN DO IT! First of all- stop beating up on yourself, get some confidence and stop dwelling on the past! I will not be the one to tell you that you can't do it. It just depends on how MOTIVATED YOU TRULY ARE! And you have to be HONEST with yourself. I got an "F" in Psychology a few years back and it wasn't even my fault. The cc I attended at the time was very, very unorganized (anyone that lives in the city of Chicago will know who I am talking about). I was going through personal issues at the time and dropped all of my classes. However, they didn't drop that one and issued me an "F". The school catalog states that if you do not attend the 1st 2 classes, the teacher automatically drops you, but obviously that didn't happen. I tried to argue, but to no avail, the grade stuck. I accepted it and moved on- no use crying over spilled milk. When I had my mind set that I was more ready than I'd ever be, I enrolled in 22 CR. IN 1 SEMESTER! (I know I'm sick). But I had it so made up in my mind that I was ready to make a better life for me and my 5 kids. I took the following:

Art History (A) 3cr

Anthropology (A) 3cr

College Chemistry w/lab (A) 5cr

Humanities II (B) 3cr

Microbiology w/lab (A) 4cr

Sociology (A) 3cr

All this while serving as the Vice President of Phi Theta Kappa and helping us to get to the convention in Anaheim California (whew! Lotsa work). I am in no means saying this to brag. It's just the only way that I can think of to show you that it can be done- if you're completely honest with yourself , motivated and know what you're getting into. At that time I was on fire; but I fell again. Just when I got accepted to the University, I began going through a bad divorce, and I withdrew from my 1st 2 semesters there which doesn't look good at all. So, I know how personal issues can affect you. That's why I say give yourself a HUGE pat on the back- you deserve it! At least you completed your classes, average or better, all while going through some things. To me that's better than average as I didn't complete anything at the time of my situation. That's how I know you can do it if you just muster up some confidence in yourself. It's not falling down that matters, it's not getting up that does. I'll be rooting for you girl!
