How should I study for pharmacology? How did you or are you -studying for pharm?

Nursing Students LPN-RN

Hello everyone!

I just completed orientation for an LPN program, and I would like to be ahead of the game by studying pharmacology. Any suggestions of how I should study? I have a ton of index cards that I will fill up with drug information. I was thinking about doing 10 drugs at a time, by going through Mosby's nursing drug reference 2011, starting from the very first page (I know, I'm nuts, but my instructor said that it was a good idea . Which drugs should I really focus on? Which drugs do LPNs usually deal with most of the time? What are the classifications and how should I organize them / everything? I know not to memorize any part of nursing, and I really want to understand it all, so I would love to hear your suggestions. Thank you much!

I would learn the definition of each drug classification, and memorize the most common endings and most common drugs used and their side effects. This is a short list, but if you know the most common 100 drugs or so used and the side effects you should watch for you should be good. When you get assigned to a floor, memorize all common drugs of that group before you step on the floor.

First off there is no way on God's green earth you can ever memorize every drug in the drug book..well..unless you have a photographic memory. That's why they have the drug books ?

This!! You will overwhelm yourself. Just start familiarizing yourself with the names and basic functions of them and then make up stupid and silly ways to remember them.

The pharm course I am taking, there is a TON of material. Literally impossible to finish reading all the chapters and taking notes. Yet the questions on the exams are quite specific. Any suggestions?

I am in a RN program and we use ATI. I love it!!!

I just finished RN school and I created a Pharmacology app that contains all of the notes I took to prep for the meds portion of the NCLEX and school. Check it out, it has the essentials of what a nurse needs to know. Its called: Nclex drug study guide.

I will be in the LPN program August 2018 and want to get a head start on Pharmacology--anyone out there have a "sample" of study cards for Pharmacology? Please and thank you.
